Agreed about this. It does seem that in this latest series some bits of exposition are missed - I wonder if they ended up on the cutting room floor? My guess is we did have an engine, but it blew up during seprate testing - too late for a replacement to be built before the flares intensified.
They may well have ended up in an overspill pipe, but how that happened is still a mystery when the whale's mouth is surrounded by the vacuum of space and nothing else. Unless of course, space whales only vomit through their blowholes...
