Can someone tell me a good starting point, based on the fact i like Blue Monday and Ceremony

and dont like Confusion

Well you could try the singles compliation, 'Substance'. It does have Confusion on it though

They were never really an albums band, IMO, although 'Technique' is a good album. You could try that. It's quite techno-ey in places.

This is a good starting point if your new to New Order. I lent to a chavvy friend to educate him in proper music and he seems to have taken to New Order.

If you like Blue Monday, how about True Faith?

Maybe my favourite band, their best work is utterly transcendent and uplifting for me.

"The Best Of" is probably your best first stop, as it doesn't feature "Confusion". and gets bonus points for including wonderful non-singles "1963" and "Vanishing Point."

"Substance" is all of the 12" singles and B-sides up to "True Faith" (with re-recorded versions of "Temptation" and "Confusion") and is superb, but maybe a bit much for newcomers, though it includes the amazing instrumental version of "Thieves Like Us."

My favourite standalone album is "Technique", followed closely by "Power Corruption & Lies." Fill yer boots!

They're handling the Joy Division singles now but the New Order stuff can be found in last year's entries.

This is the most comprehensive collection ever of New Order's singles while on Factory records and addresses all shortcomings of Substance (the full unedited versions of 'The Perfect Kiss', 'Sub-Culture' and 'Shellshock are included plus both versions of 'Ceremony' for example). It might seem a bit much for someone new to the band but I think you really can't go wrong starting here. I'd recommend you check out the following:

True Faith (includes 1963)
Thieves Like Us
Touched By The Hand Of God
Bizarre Love Triangle
The Perfect Kiss

the Technique era singles as well:

Fine Time
Round & Round
Run 2

Or perhaps best of all start with 'Ceremony' and work your way through it chronologically and watch the development of their sound through the years.

This project is unofficial of course but it's not just some blog ripping off a band's back catalogue. An enormous amount of work, care and attention has gone into this. I don't know of anything else quite like it. Much of the material has been sourced from vinyl involving painstaking work cleaning and restoring the tracks (with incredible results!). You get an idea of the process from reading this. Plus the restoration of the artwork is simply breathtaking. I'd urge all New Order fans to check it out.

Beyond this, in terms of albums then I'd agree about "Technique" and "Power, Corruption & Lies" - both outstanding albums in my opinion, and if you get that far then you'll probably want to own everything else at that stage anyway!

Forget the best of albums... go out and buy the aforementioned "Power, Corruption and Lies"and "Technique" (agree Vanishing Point is awesome!).

"Low Life" has some great moments too.

Best to avoid "Brotherhood" and "Republic"

I love Joy Division and New Order, but must confess I have trouble recognising many of their songs from the titles
I have to play them and then go "oh, that one"

I agree.

Substance is one of my favourite albums. They were always masters of the 12-inch single! I can't actually even listen to the shortened radio edit of Perfect Kiss, because the long version is so perfect ly constructed. . Same goes for most of their other songs.

It also does my head in that 'Substance' is also the name of one of the Joy Division albums. Verrrry confusing!

I have that trouble too. The titles seem to be just an afterthought on many of the tracks.

I actually like the fact that a great deal of New Orders singles didn't have a well recognisable chorus

On top of which, most of their early records didn't even feature the band's name on the sleeves, they were such enigmas then...

The long version on Substance is vastly superior to that shortened edit but it's actually an edit itself (of the full 12" version). This Substance Edit is 8:02 while the original 12" version is 8:46. Shellshock was edited down even more from 9:41 to the 6:28 version found on Substance and Sub-Culture was edited from 7:26 on the 12" to 4:48 on Substance. All of this was done as there wasn't enough room on the CD at the time and it's remained like that on all subsequent pressings.

You can find the full unedited versions of those songs here, here and here (all from the site I linked to in my previous post).

Anyway, I just found this thread quite by chance the other day (I haven't even been lurking here) but felt compelled to register and post about this as I think anyone who wants to get into New Order should know about it. Longtime fans should also find plenty to enjoy here too. Not much of a reaction here so far but I do hope some people will check it out as it really is fantastic and the more hits it gets the greater the chances the record company will take interest and manufacture the set.

I've just had a quick look, and it looks very interesting..I will definitely have a longer look/listen to that stuff when I get the chance. Thanks for the link!

No problem. There is a lot there so you do need to take the time to explore it and I suppose you have to be in the right mood before you go and play 5 different versions of Confusion haha. I think a good starting point to get a taste of it is True Faith as that's a nice bundle with quite a few different things included. The different versions of the song are really good too, particularly 'True Dub', probably my favourite of all those Dub versions.

Yeah, I love 'Round and Round' too. I think it might be a bit underrated actually as you don't hear it mentioned that often. Maybe some people feel that 'Vanishing Point' should have been the single instead but I'm glad it was released. Especially because it was re-recorded and we got that wonderful 12" version with the gorgeous intro. You can find it here. Another sublime New Order moment!

Oi! I paid good money for that 12"

Vanishing point should have been the single btw

Nice to see World In Motion included on the blog- second best football song of all time

If I had to choose between them then I would say Vanishing Point is the superior song (and possibly the best song on the album) but for some reason I just love Round & Round as a single and can't imagine the whole Technique era without it. I think Vanishing Point could have been released instead of Run though.

As for World In Motion, well I have mixed feelings about it. It's certainly a great football song but I don't think of it as a great New Order song. I remember hearing the Reportage theme and when World In Motion came out it felt like they'd just grabbed that, got Keith Allen to write some lyrics and threw it out there without much thought. I also feel it kind of overshadows their other work a bit. A lot of people probably only know New Order for that song (and Blue Monday of course!) and that's a shame when you think of something like Thieves Like Us or The Perfect Kiss which aren't that well known but are a better representation of the band and what was so great about them.

Regret and Ruined In A Day are good off the latter. I quite liked the fact they still mixed keyboards into their arrangements in the '90's. (see also Bernard Sumner's side-project Electronic)
