Hot Dogs + Toppings
What are your fave hot dogs and what toppings do you prefer?
Unfortunately where I live there is a limited choice of good hog dog sausages, most are thin "kiddies" type but there are some bigger and even giant brands. My fave though are Herta Jumbo. http://www.hertafrankfurters.co.uk/products/jumbos.aspx The Herta regular could be used for hot dogs but I just generally snack on them. They have a nice smokey flavour. Another point is the buns. The buns I can get are regular "baps" just in a finger shape. They are a little too fluffy and tend to disintergrate with the sauces. My regular toppings are fried or boiled onion, ketchup and mustard. I saw an episode of The Sopranos and they had something called a Lincoln Log that seemed to be a hot dog with cream cheese. I tried it and it's not too bad. Something i'm going to have this or next week is a chilli dog. I have the chilli and the cheese ready. Just need to pick a free night for when I feel up to it

I really want hot dogs now!
Crispy fried onions, ketchup and American mustard. I prefer them in crunchy baguette rather than finger style rolls. |

Ketchup, onion and grated cheese.
Or with mustard and sauerkraut. |

In my hay day, after a night of drinking in the city, I would hit up the nearest street vendor for a big spicy sausage on a thick roll, philly cream cheese, American mustard and grilled onions. Nothing better.

Tesco Vegetarian Hot Dogs, with tomato sauce and a bun thingy.
I'd rather have some chicken or beef or lamb instead though. And especially not the meat hot dogs. :O You're eating a dog that went woof woof that has been char-grilled in the oven and then made into hot dogs. I allways wonder why the tesco vege hot dogs are orange though? Where they made with ginger dogs? ![]() To all you dog lovers, you should feel ashamed. You're eating your dog in a bun with tomato sauce. Eughhh

A couple of weeks ago I had a craving for the cheapest, crappiest hotdogs known to man. The style that are on offer usually from stalls around bonfire night - cheap boiled 'sausages', cheap finger rolls with onions. Had them with ketchup and mustard. Wonderful.
However one of the best ones I had was in France (I'm sure they do them in other places). The got a third of a baguette, put it on this spike to make a sausage shaped hole, then put a sausage in there but managed somehow to put the ketchup and mustard in there too. Was fantastic, mainly due to it lasting so long. Was good to gnaw at this thing while wandering around town. Disappointing hotdogs go to the Austrians - long frankfurter sausage served seperately from the bun, which is a normal round crusty bun. In no way could it house the sausage. I'm guessing you eat a bite from each, but still, wasn't really up to scratch. |

When I was at Uni Morrisons once did an offer on frankfurters, can't remember what brand but they were vacuum packed in blocks of eight. Three for the price of one! I lived on them for about a week.

I cannot bear frankfurters, but love sausages.
Why's that? What's the difference between a 'good British banger' and a frankfurter? |

The common hot dog that we seem to consider as a frankfurter is more densley packed and has no filler. On the otherhand though, they are comeletely different and if you were expecting a hot dog and got a sausage bun then I would be dissapointed.
The ones I prefer say they are 100% pork http://www.hertafrankfurters.co.uk/products/jumbos.aspx I'm sure some of the others are made up of pork and chicken and maybe even turkey and beef etc. |

Sonora Dog. Unique to my hometown.
Here it is featured on Man Vs Food: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXaXy4aeJt4 It's a hotdog, wrapped in bacon, covered in beans, onions, tomatoes, mustard, jalapeno sauce and mayo. |

They could be a bit chewy if the baguette was not really fresh though. In Budapest they were served by the most stunning woman I've ever met. Think Ingrid Bergman with black hair and emerald eyes. And to quote AC/DC "The body of Venus with arms". Needless to say we went to her stall a lot. |

I haven't got around do doing the chilli dog yet but did make an inbetween version the other night.
I cooked the dog in low to medium heat in the deep fryer. Along with the regular onions, ketchup and mustard I topped it with salsa and cheese. Very messy, but very yummy

If you watch Nascar a few races ago they were at a place called Martinsville. This track is famous all over the States for it's RED hot dogs sold at price that makes it a cheap meal so cheap that a member of one of the the race teams ate 42 of them over five days at the track. Even the Fox TV team always talk about how many they have chomped on and nobody eats less than five. The shop has a sign that states what you can have on the hot dog, it would be more simple to remember what they dont put on them. The worst, for me was the chile sauce and cold slaw combination One group of hot dog sellers have for the price of four dolors a foot long hot dog. I am very "Old School" and have onions cooked for an hour on a very low heat and then the tomatoe sauce. The buns are not up to much as Wharburton stopped making them, they were superb individually made things of delight not the mass made things on sale now.

Finally got round to having that Chilli Dog!
It was nice, but not amazing. I would have been just as happy with my regular ketchup, mustard and onions. But it was a change to the norm ![]() Maybe a better quality chilli would help (I just used some from a tin, but cooked it down to make it drier). Here are some pics (sorry about the picture quality) http://www.degs.co.uk/wordpress/archives/72 |
