Herta Jumbos for me too, although I've tried some polish ones from Tescos that were good too nothing else seems to be any good. I always microwave or shallowfry them now, never boil. Cheap finger rolls, caramelised onions, ketchup and American mustard. I've also recently been introduced to sweet onion relish, which is quite nice. I'd like to try a Coney Hotdog which is a Michigan thing a bit like a Chilli dog but without Chilli!

I thought the coney dog did have chilli but it's a specific type that is only used for toppings. You wouldn't actually have it as "chilli". It's more of a spiced mince gravy.

I think it's one of those things that is open to debate, but I was told a real Coney has no chilli and no beans.

Mmmm just found this recipe, might have to give it a go now!!

I love a Hot Dog covered in a hot chilli, melted cheese and coleslaw. It's a sloppy mess, but tastes exceptional.

One of my favourite is basic but got hooked on it when I was in over in Germany and it was hot dog with crispy onions and ketchup. Just loved it and its an addiction that has stayed with me now and has just reminded me I need to go buy more crispy onions. I just loved them even the taste of the sausage etc just (licks lips and drools) I really need to go back there sometime soon.

I also like cheese on my hot dogs and have had one with bacon wrapped round it and cheese on top which was good and have never found again. Used to like the ones at Costco as well.

Want to give the Hot Dogs at Eds a try keep meaning to but always end up somewhere else

Either chilli cheese or American Mustard and green relish.

In the UK I find the best sausages to use are German Bockwurst, tend to get them from Aldi.

Are those the white ones? I tried them last year and found them a bit strange.

For me, it can only be Costco Chicago style beef hot dog sausages, with French's mustard, fried onions and dill pickle relish in a large hot dog bun.

Talking of which, for the first time ever on Saturday's episode they went to a restaurant I'd actually been to! The deep dish pizza restaurant in Chicago. I just had a small one though.

I remember that ep. It's the massive deep dishes where they put the cheese on first and the sauce on top. It seemed to be quite a famous joint and not just a local haunt like in some of the other locations on Man v Food and DDD.

Just been into ALDI and the white ones are bratwurst. When I had them they tasted ok, a little strange as they are different to regular sausages and the texture was definately noticable.

I didn't see the bockwurst in ALDI though.

Unfortunately where I live there is a limited choice of good hog dog sausages, most are thin "kiddies" type but there are some bigger and even giant brands.
My fave though are Herta Jumbo.

http://www.hertafrankfurters.co.uk/products/jumbos.aspx
The Herta regular could be used for hot dogs but I just generally snack on them. They have a nice smokey flavour.

Another point is the buns. The buns I can get are regular "baps" just in a finger shape. They are a little too fluffy and tend to disintergrate with the sauces.

My regular toppings are fried or boiled onion, ketchup and mustard.

I saw an episode of The Sopranos and they had something called a Lincoln Log that seemed to be a hot dog with cream cheese. I tried it and it's not too bad.

Something i'm going to have this or next week is a chilli dog. I have the chilli and the cheese ready.
Just need to pick a free night for when I feel up to it ”

LIDL Smoked Bockwurst.
Nice decent sized hot dogs with a good flavour. On a par with Jumbo Herta. They are firmer than Herta, especially the skin which is very firm and has a snap to it.

The white ones are actually the continental equivalent to white pudding, degsy.
In my house they are to be eaten with a great big dollop of apple sauce.

They are in glass bottles, near the beans and tinned goods in my local aldi. Just need warming up. as like american herta hot dogs they are steamed in their casing. Very good for hot dogs and much prefer them over the american ones, also use them in pasta bake.

The LIDL bockwurst are in the fresh cooked meat section and come in a plastic pack. They are dry and don't know whether people would think that better or worse than being in brine. I guess brined ones would last longer in the fridge but they may not have the same firm texture or snappy skin.

I had one earlier, just cold out of the fridge dipped into american mustard and hot sauce. It was very nice and the flavour instantly reminded me of Herta frankfurters.
