"Bigfoot" 12 " hotdogs are excellent with a genuine 70% pork content.

After cooking, slice a channel almost the full length of the sausage, insert some cheese and pop in microwave for 30 seconds.

Top with Tomato ketchup and/or couple of spots of hot sauce - Encona hot pepper or Dunn's River.

As an alternative to the for-some-reason-hard-to-obtain hot dog roll a home-bake petit pain.

American mustard, which seems popular, I've just discovered is French's mustard or Cream Salad/ballpark mustard. The first 'instant mustard' basically and still America's number 1.

I make a courgette chutney whcih goes very well with hot dogs (though i ususally prefere a sausage to a true hot dog).

Buns are a problem. For some reason when I use a baguette or petit pain it take it away from being a hot dog and in to a sausage bun.

I found some nice buns in ASDA once. They were panini rolls and they were denser than standard finger/hot dog rolls but I haven't seen them since.

True, if the rolls are not soft the filling will get squeegeed everywhere when you bite into it.

But it has to be just right. I don't like the standard finger/hot dog rolls you get everywhere, though I do put up with them, as they are just too soft.

If I remember next time i'm in ASDA i'll look for those panini rolls. They were different to standard panini buns you tend to get.

EDIT: I think it was these

You take a hotdog, stuff it with some jack cheese, roll it in a pizza...

I honestly, after reading this thread, have never more in my life wanted a hotdog!! I'll settle for an Ikea, or one of the massive ones you get at the cinema!!! Lots of onion for me thanks

Was experimenting with chilli dogs this weekend using Tesco's beef chilli, zinged up with Encona pepper sauce, Herta standard franks and Tesco's hot dog buns.

Groove the bun down the middle but not so much that it splits, drop in a handful of very finely chopped onions, couple of big tablespoons of chilli, frank, then another layer of chilli. Sloppy but wonderful.

I think perhaps next weekend I'll go for a finely chopped red onion/jalapeno mix for the base, and griddle rather than microwave the franks. Maybe some grated cheese on top.

Degsy are the hotdogs better deep fried rather than just heated up as they instruct?

It depends on your mood. It gives them a cripsy outside.
Sometimes I simmer with the onions or fry them with the onions. That depends on how i'm doing the onions.

I thought the bratwurst from LIDL were better deep fried than simmered.

My most favourite 'hotdog' is one I had from a cafe in Paris

It was simply a really good frankfurter in a proper french baguette - not a roll but a large crispy filling warm french stick and covered in ketchup and served with fries.

So simple but so perfect.
