Cutting sugar out of my food.
My mum used to have half teaspoon of sugar in her tea but now she has none, she says that if you are eating a biscuit and its already sweet there is no need to add sugar to your tea. Also she is not taking sugar with her cereal because she says fruit already has sugar and its healthier to chuck a few banana pieces in. And because she is 47 she does not want to get diabetes in future so she is avoiding eating sugar and sweet foods, she doesn't like sweet that much anyway just occasionally so its not hard for her.
She told me to do the same thing not to eat sugar with my tea or cereal and then I can get used to it. I don't take any extra salt with my food and Im used to it now. So I want to try the same with sugar. I am not a big fan of sweet foods either EXCEPT I love chocolate which I find myself buying every couple of weeks. So how can I give that up? I am also overweight so that would be a good start to get healthier.

I don't think you need to worry about buying chocolate once every couple of weeks. You have to have some treats, if you deny yourself everything you like then you will crack and it won't be sustainable. If you are overweight then it is other areas of your diet that you need to look at, not the odd bar of chocolate every fortnight.

I used to have sugar on cereal but when I gave it up I found I only ever had it because ads encouraged us to. When I gave up sugar in tea I still needed half a teaspoon of sugar in coffee initially but gave that up about 8 months later

You get used to it, I promise. As I've just said on another thread (don't want to go on about it but it's relevant) I was diagnosed with Diabetes a few months ago and sugar became a big no-no. It took me a month or so but I don't miss it - even with stuff like Cereal that I absolutely poured it on to. As for chocolate, if you research it you can find some lower sugar stuff like a Kit-Kat (2 finger ideally) or a Club/Blue Riband type - moderation's the key even with Diabetes, so if it's not an issue then I can only agree with the poster above about having it as "treats".
