None of my family ever ate scallops before so I buyed four King Scallops for £2, they ridiculously expensive as well .

But I want to taste them as I never have and try it out, but there is orange thing sticking out of white scallop. I haven't touched it yet but its soft and really bright. Can that part be eaten or is it poisonous?

It's a poo sticking out. You buyed a stray poo.

Sorry, just being daft. I am a bit grumpy today and was trying to entertain myself.

Do you mean those fried potato things? I don't think they're meant to be orange.

It's the coral. Which is the eggs
It is edible and I think it's lovely, but some people don't like it .
Maybe they think its a bit fishy or maybe they don't like the idea of eating eggs.
You might as well try it, seeing as you've got it.

The orange bit is the coral or roe. Yes, it's quite edible.

The pink part is called the coral. It is edible but personally I don't like it or eat it. Love scallops though!

Thanks guys for the info . I first thought the orange thing might be a hard tail but then I saw it looked soft so it must be roe/coral.

Well I have eaten many fish eggs before, and I love herring roe. So Im definently going to eat scallop roe!

Scallops are a popular type of shellfish in both Eastern and Western cooking. They are characterized by having two types of meat in one shell: the adductor muscle, called "scallop" which is white and meaty, and the roe, called "coral", which is red or white and soft. (taken from wiki).

You can eat both parts but I have only had the white bit tbh nice with chorizo sausage, Fry chorizo with no oil for a few minutes, then remove from pan and set to one side, fry scallops in the oil from chorizo (i think for 3/4 mins each side but depends on thickness) serve on a bed of rocket and drizzle a bit of lemon juice over. Easy and delicious.

This should really be on food and drink though.

Coral = yum.

The colour is very striking as well - looks good in a dish.
I do scallops in a creamy leek sauce.

I think you are confusing scallop with gnocchi!

Scallop are seafood (like an oyster) gnocci is potato!.

I like the coral. Growing up, you never saw a scallop without it but it's really fallen out of favour in the last few decades.

The'll serve a scallop with back pudding, sweetbreads and all manor of what-have-you but woe betide you serve it as nature intended.

I don't know whether you get them in your area but we get something from the chippie called a 'scallop' which is a large disc of potato, about 1cm thick, which is dipped in batter and fried.

I think that's what Summerain meant.

Yes, that is what I meant, thanks! It's like a giant, flat hash brown that you get from a chippy.
But I do like gnocci too

Well today my mum fried the scallops and we tasted it. I thought it was very tasty but not worth the money because its so expensive and it tastes similar to king prawns so there is not much of a big difference.

I loved the white fleshy part.

But not really a fan of the orange thing, although my mum said its a lovely colour. I mean most eggs are just plain looking.
