I don't know, I did not give it a second thought. I quite like the idea he has met someone before that we haven't seen on screen. I actually thought it was a nice touch, much like the Queen Elizabeth bit at the end of The Shakespeare Code, it adds a little speculation to fandom (and there is nothing more fandom likes than speculation) Unless it is revealed in the upcoming episode it also leaves possible ideas for future writers and future episodes to use the Doctors first encounter with Churchill, much like the River Song scenario.
As a possible future episode The Doctor and a young Churchill is a rather mouth watering scenario if you ask me. From an early age Churchill always said he had a destiny, now just where or Who he got that idea from would be a nice tale.

I agree. He's over 900 years old, it's pretty safe to say he's met Churchill in the past whether we've seen it or not.
While it really doesn't matter when he met Churchill before I wouldn't mind if there was some small hint given.
Something like Churchill asking after a particular companion maybe.
It does seem from the previews/trailers that Churchill is not totally shocked by the Doctors change in appearance so he may well have met more than one Doctor already.

Yes, the Doctor met him twice in the BBC Books series. In 'Players' and 'The Shadow in the Glass'.
Sorry guys I was referring to the clip that's been put up because Churchill recognised this newly regenerated Doctor and didn't seem to question it. I suppose the tardis gave it away mind you

I really like what Ste Moffat is doing with this series. It's gone very retro yet seems remarkably fresh.
The Churchill phone call reminds me of a similar thing that hapend to Doc #4 at the end of Revenge of the Cybermen. Although on that occasion it was a distress call from the Brig.
The brighly coloured Daleks remind me of the Dr Who films with Peter Cushing. It's all got a good feel to it.

He does seem to question it IMO with his "Doctor?" Which is why I said it seems he has met more than one Doctor, he's aware that the Doctor can change appearance but has not met the 11th Doctor before.

There's another example where the 6th Doctor is sent a distress call from a Spaceship Captain he has met before but who the audience had never seen.

It would have to be after the disaster that was "Gallipoli" - the Doctor would never have left him capable of such a monumental cock up...also, Who is littered with historical name dropping that we've never seen onscreen some of which has caused terrible problems for the continuity police down the years

As I recall, his first meeting with Churchill in the books was in 1899 when Churchill was a war correspondent. I thought that was an interesting decision-far less obvious than automatically setting the story in World War II.
The main historical continuity problem in classic Who, i think, was the fourth Doctor claiming he'd been falsely accused of starting the Great fire of London in Pyramids of Mars years before the fifth Doctor actually did it in The Visitation, though I guess the two stories don't necessarily contradict each other.

I haven't read Players (one of the two books you mentioned), but for some reason I've always been convinced it was a Season 6b Second Doctor story.

No, sixth Doctor and Peri. Set during season 22. There are flashback scenes with the second Doctor which tie-in to the prequel, 'World Game', which is set during season 6B, though.
