When I was younger I used to be into 'Men at Work'. Then I got into INXS and when I was over there I really liked 'Midnight Oil'. Can anyone recommend any good Australian bands?

I like Silverchair and The Living End

One is a grunge band, the other, more punk.

Silverchair:

Freak

Anthem For The Year 2000

The Living End:

Roll On

What's On Your Radio

Thanks. Appreciate the links. 'Freak' had me rocking my head straight away. I can now impress my sister with a little knowledge as she is out there at the moment

Wolfmother.
The Church.

Both worth checking out. I'd leave Savage Garden well alone though!

There ware a couple of good bands back in the 60s. The Easybeats and The Master's Apprentices.

AC/DC of course and Flash & The Pan.

AC/DC are a strange one, an Australian rock band where most of the modern line up was born in Britain!

So were most of The Easybeats...plus a Dutchman!

In fact George Young & Harry Vanda of the Easybeats were Flash & The Pan and produced George's kid brother's band AC/DC.

There was yet another Young brother who was in late 60s psych/popsters Grapefruit.

The ones in my collection are (band:album)
George : Polyserena (don't think the band is together anymore)
The Whitlams : Eternal nightcap
Augie March : Moo you bloody choir (not sure if the band is together anymore)
Regurgitator : Unit
Empire of the sun : Walking on a dream
Machine-Gun-Fellatio : Paging Mr Strike (band broke up)
Crowded House : loads of their albums

Oldies but goodies:
Hoodoo Gurus
Icehouse
Cold chisel

The Triffids, definitely. One of the most cruelly underrated bands of all time. Honest, I'm not kidding, they were seriously good.

Listen to 'Wide Open Road', 'Raining Pleasure', 'Field Of Glass' .

What's coming out of Australia recently then? Who is making a name for themselves in the pub circuit in the major cities at the moment?

Dancing in the Storm is my fave song from Boom Crash Opera. It's also the only song of theirs I can remember! Probably should mention Hunters and Collectors as well since 'Throw your arms around me' is a classic.

Forgot to also add Powderfinger. I have a couple of their albums. These days and passenger are my fave songs of theirs.

As for current stuff - I think John Butler Trio are still kicking about. There's also The temper trap

eta: oops temper trap already mentioned so I'll add Magic Dirt.

2 great indie pop guitar bands from oz

from the 90s, the very under-rated 'even as we speak' who still have the definitive version of new orders bizarre love triangle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwGmuHgmcyc

and, although no one has probably ever heard of them, i really love this band from melbourne, the triangles. their song 'lets replace the cityscapes' is what a good pop song should be about.
