Has anyone else noticed some REALLY sloppy editing in the new episodes? We had the Doctor reaching for his Tardis key twice in the "Eleventh Hour" and just watch the pre-titles to "Beast Below". When the boy enters the lift, the Smiler looks at him in its "downward" form and then the next shot is the smiler turning and changing to its downward form! And then, in the long shot is already looking at him in its "grr toothy form", then all of a sudden, next shot, is turning to it's "grr toothy form!"

Minor gripes I know, but they are REALLY obvious. I just hope this sorts itself out in upcoming episodes......

Cause if it's not deliberate then it's really sloppy editing...

First off, these kinds of mistakes are not the results of editing mistakes, rather mistakes that are made during the shooting stage. The job of on-set continuity observers to ensure these kind of mistakes are not present during filming in order to prevent difficulties during the editing stage.

Secondly, these are not examples of "Really sloppy" continuity - anybody who has made a film, either in amateur or proffesional programs, will know how difficult and intricate the maintanence of on set continuity is. And anybody who has seen the show on bbc 3 about continuity mistakes (can't remember it's name) will know that these kinds of errors are prevalent at all levels within the industry.

I'd also say the two examples quoted do not particularly detract from the experience of watching the episode, or affect the nature of the storytelling. I certainly didn't notice either of them the first time I watched.

OP watch the Greatest Movie Mistakes on BBC 3....then you won't have any issues with a smaller budgeted show like Doctor Who making that odd little mistake....

In TBB MS have a shot of his face full on , when the camera shot the back view his head was in a different place. Minor quibbles.

As has rightly already been said, this happens all the time. When shooting multiple takes with a single camera from different angles it's just not possible for everything to happen at exactly the same time on each take, so errors like this are bound to happen when the shots are cut together. Avoiding it would very often result in far worse problems such as poor pacing of the sequence.
It's only since people have been able to record and analyse material at home that this has mattered. When you could only watch it once in real time, although you may have thought you saw an error, there was no way of going back and checking, let alone freeze framing and playing it slowly!
It happens sometimes in all film and TV, don't let it worry you!

Now that you have mentioned the bad editing, I can't help myself looking for them.

In last nights (terrible) episode did anyone notice that when the Doc and the Dalek appeared on the monitor (in the war room place where Amy was) that the Dalek was right up close to the Doc, practically touching him with the Dalek laser (23 mins 51 secs on iPlayer). Then in the next shot they are a good 4 foot apart (23 mins 53)

In fairness to the Final Cut Editor it may well have been done on purpose as the monitors' screen was so tiny. But it really jumped out to me.

It is getting more noticeable this series, IMO. Last night's episode was full of moments where there was a lack of continuity between shots e.g. when the Dr, Amy and Churchill are in the corridor near the beginning: one moment the Dr's hands are in his pockets, then out, then in again and then back out.

Is it bad editing or bad acting or even bad Direction though? ... The Editor can only stitch together what he is given. I think the poor guy is getting some clumsy stuff pushed his way. I'd be going ape s**t if it were me

I do wonder how much the actors themselves are supposed to remember what they were doing at each point of each take...
