New soap on five
garymonc
10-05-2004
P&G productions have sent five an outline for a new 5-day a week soap opera set in the costa blanca, southern spain

The show called 'SUNSET DREAMS' is set in a fictional beachside town and follows the lives and loves of British ex-pats.

Allthough the studio scenes will be filmed in london; the location scenes will be filmed in southern spain. The cast will fly to spain each week for a couple of days and film all location scenes. The rest of the studio scenes will be filmed in london.

As H&A has provan; British viewers love beachside soaps set in exotic places. This new soap is sure to be a hit.

It is expected that FAMILY AFFAIRS will be axed to make way for it

I'd rather see Shortland St in place of FA

Firstly why the hell would they waste time in flying to Spain EACH week just to film location scenes?! Bit annoying ain't it. Oh and I think FA will be staying where it is.

this programme you are talking about will run for series's it will not be on 365 days a year like most other soaps. Bit like Baywatch - more of a drama than a soap, but along the same lines.

are you talking about Shortland street ?
The only soaps on 365 days a year are the British ones.
Neighbours, home and Away, shortland Street all take a break (about 6 /8 weeks) around Xmas.

what's more if they pick up where ITV left it, they would be able to show it
5 days a week all year round for years until they catch up with NZ (a bit like Home & Away)

And where did you get this information from?

Family Affairs is one of Fives highest rated programmes. I can't see them risking that on another soap. Lets admit it, there are too many already. With Emmerdale now being shown on Sundays and an extra Corrie on a Monday night, in my opinion thats the main reason Family Affairs isn't more popular. Not to mention Crossroads, we've reached soap overload and don't need anymore.

Were you a fan of Shortland Street then? Me too, I thought ITV treated it appallingly. I wish it would come back.

True but they still want higher ratings. It costs £11 million per year for FA and it only gets a 5% aud-share. It costs five only £3 million a year to show H&A and that gets an 8% aud-share. If the show stinks then axe it and try a new show! Lets face it; theve got nothing to loose

Apart from viewers. I don't think people are going to start watching a new soap, whatever its like. Family Affairs might not pull in huge viewing figures, but its got a regular following, something a new soap would struggle to achieve. Crossroads was a breath of fresh air when it returned (twice), but viewers weren't intrested.

I really do hope this rumour isn't true. Anyway how much would it cost to send the cast and crew to Spain once a week?

I heard this on another website and I didn't believe it then either. On that occasion it was "because 5 are worried they may lose H&A". The programme may (or may not) be filming but if it is I think some wires have been crossed somewhere as to how it will be used.

Well that other website you read was telling porkies as well!

Five signed Home and Away on a lifetime deal - that is, as long as the soap stays in production, which it will do for the forseeable future, Five will show it in the UK. Therefore, Five would never have been worried about losing the show!

Also, don't 5 pay for part of the production costs therefore they can say that it is a home made show?

Have you never heard of low budget airlines?

You can get a return ticket to southern spain for £35; the new soap will only need to fly some of the cast to spain; not all of them each week!

Because of the crude oil price hike, Qantas already had to raise their fares.
Anyway why go to Spain when you can go to The Isle Of wight.

I really doubt this as FIVE have said they are committed to FA, and are in no danger of losing FA, unless it is a daytime soap to fill the gap left by Terry and Gabby. Plus there are a few indications that this is a hoax...P&G Productions is an American based company responsible for As The World Turns and Guiding Light, and I doubt FIVE would call a show Sunset Dreams as people would expect it to be Sunset Beach.

Thats exactly what i thought. Iv read a lot about P&G not wanting any more soaps and people actually worried that they may even get rid of the 2 they have left!
