Hi everyone, just thought i would share my review of the navman mio M400 with everyone on here. Let me know if you have any questions.
This product is sold as either the Navman Mio M400, or Mio M400, or simply Navman M400 but they are all the same product. Halfords stocks this as the M450D but this is also the same product, don't be fooled by the "exclusive to halfords" marketing as the only difference is the model number.
This sat nav commonly comes with two mapping options, UK and Ireland, or UK, Ireland and Western Europe. My advice is if you think there is a chance you will use the M400 in Europe at any time in the future then spend a little more and buy the version with European maps straight away as it works out much cheaper than buying the extra maps seperately in the future.
You get a case, USB cable, data DVD, windscreen mount and car charger.
The M400 comes ready to go with an (almost) full battery. Setup is very simple, simply switch on, choose your language and away you go.
First impressions of this unit are great. The build quality is fantastic, with no creaks and a good quality feel. The sat nav casing is made from matte black plastic with a matte red outer screen surround on the front which ensures minimal dazzle, and a good grip on the device.
This satnav gets a very fast GPS fix which means no more sitting around for ages for it to identify your position before setting off. The holder is very sturdy and doesn't wobble even when going over the roughest of roads. Signal is very good indeed, i am sat indoors in a room with small windows whilst writing this review and the still getting a GPS signal!
You have the usual sat nav features on this device with the ability to save locations to your favourites, and also set a home address allowing one click navigation back home. There is also a list of recent destinations allowing quick and easy input of frequently used locations.
As for useability, the touch screen is very responsive and can be set to automatically adjust the brightness for daytime and night time driving. The menu is very easy to get used to.
The sound can easily be adjusted to cope with the road noise of motorway driving and is easily heard over my car stereo. The M400 has the option to read out the characters as you type which is great for those who may sometimes struggle with typos, although this can easily be disabled.
This version also comes with Lane Assist, helping you negotiate those busy junctions in the correct lane, as well as a speed warning. If the sat nav knows the speed limit of the road you are driving on, it will beep to alert you if you go over the speed limit and also flash up the current speed limit on the display. In my opinion this is a very useful feature and helps those who may inadvertantly stray over the limit although it can be disabled at any time.
The M400 is very easy to use in my opinion and has many search options including post code, street name, town or city, or Point of Interest. It allows you to search for points of interest near to your current location, or you can type in any location and search for the point of interest of your choice. Useful options include Cash Machines, Parking, Hotels, Hospitals, Chemists, Petrol Stattions etc etc etc
I used the M400 for a 250 mile round trip and found it kept up every step of the way. The only error en route was me taking a wrong turn which was my own fault! The M400 soon had me back on track. The ETA was extremely accurate and i arrived spot on the time i was told at the start of my journey.
I find the map guarantee a very useful feature. Basically it allows you to upgrade the maps on your device to the latest versions within 30 days of first turning on the M400. You also get 12 months free safety camera updates with the option to buy map or safety camera updates at any time from the Mio Store. You have the option to buy maps for North America and Canada, Eastern Europe, Australia and Asia from the Mio store at any time which is great for regular travellers as in my opinion it works out much much cheaper than hiring a sat nav in the country you're going to be visiting.
Battery life is pretty good too. Although most users will probably keep the M400 on charge in a car, the battery makes this a perfect unit for cyclists or walkers. There are waterproof handlebar mounted sat nav cases available on amazon.co.uk for around ten pounds.
The only downside to this unit is the default colour scheme for the maps seems to be the european one as it shows motorways in red! This is easily fixed though for people who want the british map colour schemes. This will show motorways as blue, A - roads as green, B - roads as orange, minor roads as yellow, and other roads as white. To do this go into the menu, press right, preferences, Map display, and change the colour scheme to Napier.
I would recommend this sat nav to anyone who is looking for a decent sat nav for any purpose.
