I have to be honest - she isn't making much of an impression on me either. She seems to be little more than a pout and a short skirt. Whether it is the script or the acting I don't know, but she seems to have substantially less about her than anyone else since ... Nyssa of Traken perhaps.

I said last week she wasn't 'gelling' as far as I was concerned, after tonight's episode I feel exacly the same.

I don't know if it's her, her character, the writing or the acting, but she's not the companion I'd hoped she'd be, at least not yet anyway....

I was thinking she is a bit Peri like. With sex appeal for the boys but pretty shallow in character.

I agree. I'm finding her more annoying with every passing episode.

I was having an issue with pouting but then I couldn't decide if it was something she was doing or if I was being unkind and her mouth was just like that. I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt as I couldn't work it out

I think it's the truculent teenager act that suddenly saves the day all the time for me. I liked her until the last bits in both of the last two episodes. I really hoped to like her. Maybe we do need to get to know her more. I think if we get more of the story behind her and Rory etc it maay pad her out more as a character. Also, she's only 3 episodes in.

I'm not keen on her, either. Pity they didn't make the young Amelia the new companion. The first episode has been my favourite one so far.

I don't dislike her and there is potential, just a bit empty at the minute.”

Agree with all you've said. Struggling too. I hope she's not going to save the day every week. We had that in the end with Rose and it got tiresome.

The problem is is that they don't seem to have come up with any ideas as to who she is.

She's been given a pretty interesting set-up and story (more interesting than Rose, Martha or Donna) but in terms of her actual character, what she feels, what motivates her they done nothing. When she isn't have the expected 'companion moments' she's relegated to the background doing not a lot. And because she isn't being given this development in between her 'save the day' scene they're coming across as slightly generic 'companion moments'.

Also while I do like Karen Gillan I'm not sure if she is the right type of actress for Who. Whatever your various opinions on Billie, Freema or Catherine their acting style was more broad (I think the word I'm looking for). They were more exagerrated and comic book adventure, they all seemed more comfortable doing big OMG moments and mugging on cue where Karen seems a bit self aware like she is more suited to more understated performance.

I find this thread interesting because up until tonight's episode I really liked Amy and thought Karen was doing a good job and the character was working....but today, for some reason, she annoyed the hell out of me!

As I can't put my finger on why, I won't say any more and give her the benefit of the doubt for a few more weeks as it may just have been because I didn't reckon much to the episode tonight in general.

I'm relieved I'm not the only one who feels this way. I'm not even sure why I'm not warming to her, I'm loving Matt Smith's Doctor and I found Amy's story set up very interesting. The actress seems very nice and she gets good lines and seems like a good actress. I'm just not feeling it, and I'm disappointed that I'm not. I feel weirdly detached from her? Like, it's three episodes in but I don't really feel like I know her at all.

I think that at least part of the issue is that we don't really yet know why Amy there, and apparently wants to run away from her life on earth. Strangely, that wasn't the case when we first met her, I could totally understand why the young Amelia would want to travel with the Doctor, her motivation was clear, but it's less so with the older version. I imagine that Amy's story is going to be fairly integral to the overall story arc, so hopefully we will learn more soon.

Also the girl is lovely to look at but.. perhaps a little too lovely. In some scenes she seems as if she has just wandered in from a nearby catwalk or modelling shoot, her walk and pout especially reminds me of this. I don't know though, although I haven't warmed to Amy I do think that Karen is pretty good in the role it's just the way that it's being written which is the issue. Or alternatively I'm probably being a bit too picky....

It may sound odd but I do find her too "distracting" in some scenes..

Beauty is always distracting.

She is a breath of fresh, beautiful air after the last hideous assistant. (Tate). None of the glibness and appalling attitude.

I'm getting a certain sarky cold smugness from her character at the moment, I'm not putting it down to the fact that she's cute but I remember seeing her on the Kevin Bishop show last year and we all know how smug these younger comedians can be. I think it's just rubbed off on her too much, maybe after she has more serious performances under her belt she may stop the awkward teenager look.

I think it's the same with most companions; some "feel" them and others don't. I loved Rose and Martha; some fans dislike either or both. I quite liked Donna, but found the belief of some fans that she was the greatest companion since Sarah Jane throroughly perplexing.

I like Amy so far. Maybe as we get to know her, people will feel differently.

Part of me wonders if that's been putting me off a little. Not that she's too pretty or anything but that they've made so much of it (I thought her left leg should have got its own credit in Eleventh Hour it cameoed in so many scenes). And then Steven Moffatt made a comment about it in Confidential last week that annoyed me (the "short and dumpy" comment).

Hopefully the coming weeks will change my mind! And like you say, it seems like the story arc is partly about who she is

I'm liking Amy a lot, but I did feel that she came off a little too smug in this last episode. It was the sort of attitude that ended up putting me off Rose. It certainly wasn't enough to put me off Amy, as I thought she had some good moments, too. Not quite sure exactly what it was, but I didn't feel she worked as well as she had in previous episodes.

I also think it was too son for her to save the day again. Although the reasoning was very sound (that she understood human emotion better than the Doctor) it just seemed a touch too much focus was placed on her, being that she has now saved the day two episodes in a row. Conversely, I loved the "there's always a blue wire, or is it red" "you're not helping" moment.

But I liked her a lot in the previous two episodes, so I'm not going to knock her on a somewhat sub-par part in this last episode. To be honest, I won't judge her (or Matt) fully until this series is complete. Until then we won't know what is bad acting, bad scripting or intentional story arcs.

I didn't see Confidential, so I don't know the context of the 'short and dumpy' comment but I think that all of the recent companions have been attractive.

They have seemingly made a big issue out of her looks, or maybe the press has, either way perhaps that has gone some way to distract from the rest of her character. Not that I'm saying that she's not appealing, she certainly is a very pretty girl but I don't see her as much more so than previous companions, but then again I'm a straight woman, and I know lots of male viewers who would disagree.

Either way, I really hope that her story is developed a bit more in the coming weeks. At the moment as I'm watching I find myself more involved in the likes of Liz 10 and that doesn't seem right somehow. Basically Amy is a character that I really want to care about.... but don't, and I hope that changes really soon.

Ah, perfectly put! I totally agree. She's not terrible or horrible but yes, there's something smug and sarcastic about her, and ultimately shallow. She was best at the end of the The Beast Below when she was talking to the Dr by the big picture window looking out onto the stars. We need more of that Amy and less of the swaggering cockiness we got tonight.
Sorry

I warmed to her a bit more tonight. Could have been the short skirt that did it though..

I don't really understand why the Doctor's companion simply must be a young, attractive girl wearing a short skirt. Who overacts and uses the same "surprised" face all the time. Not impressed with Amy Pond at all.

I quite liked Rose, didn't like Martha (another poorly acted companion) and mostly enjoyed Donna because she was an actual friend and team member rather than a cheeky bit of skirt. There was more depth to her and she acted it better.

But then I guess, for the target audience, cheeky bits of skirt will do them fine. Sad to hear that she's in the second series, I really hope she improves her game over time.

I love Matt Smith's Doctor, but can't settle with Amy.

It's not that I think Karen is a bad actress. I think she's a very good actress.

But I just don't understand any of the characters motivations. I know that is a pretentious thing to say, but what I mean is that I see she's feisty, I see she's fearless, I see she can cleverly come up with solutions, and I like that... but where does all this stuff come from? Where's the depth to her character?

I like the fact Amy's character isn't bogged down in a family to whom we had to be introduced in episode 1. 11 meeting Amy as a little girl was a clever way of introducing a companion, but it was clever at the expense of allowing us to find out what makes her tick.

I'm hoping this is a deliberate ploy by Moff, and we're going to learn important things about Amy in future episodes.

(So relieved to have this off my chest btw OP )

so far I havent seen her as feisty but more as a bit rude

her whole character reminds me of that cringeworthy episode where rose met queen victoria and from the first point of meeting mocked the woman instead of appreciating the fact she was meeting ...well queen victoria.
she is a bit of a social misfit, a bit of a loser with a chip on her shoulder from something from her childhood (the doctor "letting her down".)

I dont know how she could have been a kissogram, there seems to be no sense of fun in her (she rarely smiles)

she strikes me as someone who would give anyone who kissed her a good thwak LOL
