iPod Nano won't be recognized by computer

I bought an iPod nano yesterday, and my computer (windows xp) doesn't appear to recognize it. I already have iTunes but the icon won't come up on it.

Can anyone give me a step by step idiots guide to what to do ?

Many thanks.

Does anything at all happen when you plug it in?. IIRC the new ipods require service pack 3 for XP and at least itunes 9. There's not really a step by step, you open itunes and plug the ipod in to a USB. That's it. Is it charging when you plug it in?.

What is service pack 3 ?? I have no idea about anything computer wise sorry. I got iTunes when I got my first i Pod in 2006 but I have no idea if it is iTunes 9.

When I plug it into the USB, it charges, but the icon doesn't come up anywhere.

I don't know whether I even have the right iTunes or anything.

Service pack 3 is for Windows. If you have automatic updates on then you should be up to date. If you want to check then right-click the My Computer icon and then select Properties. A System Properties window will open, on the General tab it will tell you about your system, including the service pack you have installed.

In itunes, click the Help menu, then About itunes to get the version you have. You may to download the latest one.

I can't say for sure. What about your version of itunes?. If you haven't updated it since 2006 then you should definitely download the latest version from the link above.

Apple site says XP SP2 is OK, but updating itunes to the latest version might help. If it is a new nano it's possible the old itunes won't talk to it. BTW if you start itunes manually with the ipod connected does anything happen then?
