How do you know, if you're not watching it all?

No, I'm not finding it boring in the slightest. Loving it.

3 weeks in and still waiting for a decent script.

I think that the series may feel a little bit stale at first, as it has no sentimentality to it. With series 4 we had Martha showing up fairly early, not to mention the return of Donna and of course, later on Rose and the Children of Time. Series 3 saw the return of Jack (not that he served much of a purpose imo). This series, we haven't had as much chance to look back- but this may change with the return of River Song.

Another issue is that the series has taken a new direction. It cant just simply try to 'outscale' the previous finales. Russell T Davies certainly got a bit power hungry. Series 1 he attacked the earth in the year 200,100. Series 2, he threatened present Earth with the daleks and the cybermen. Series 3 he set the Master on course for a war with the whole Universe. And Series 4 he tried to destroy all of reality.

I suppose there is a more sedate nature to the fifth series, but it should pick up a bit more once it all progresses and hopefully readjusts to the 45 minute runtime which has been missing since Midnight back in 2008.

Nope, enjoying it so far.

We get threads like this every series since 2005 so no change there anyway!

Loving every minute of it - it's a great series. I Can't see the point of only watching bits of a program and then moaning about it - I mean, what? Watch a WHOLE one and then you'll be justied to review it properly.

No, not boring. It's different and there are a few things that I'm not too keen on but fair do's, I'm going to give it a whole season before judging it. Even if it's not as good as RTD's tenure (and its too early to say that yet) I will still continue to watch and enjoy it.
Let's face it, if I watched the SM era I can watched anything!

Despite what I have said here, I am loving the fifth series- more so than the 2009 specials anyway! I find it impossible to label a series as 'boring' or 'exciting' so early on as you don't have the full picture of it yet. Many people labelled Series 4 as 'lacking' as they were unimpressed with Partners in Crime, Fires of Pompeii and Planet of the Ood. Series 3 was also slated quite early on after Smith and Jones, The Shakespeare Code and Gridlock, and come to think of it so was the second series with New Earth and Tooth and Claw (School Reunion was brill though).

I have to say that I always find something I like with Doctor Who episodes. Even the episodes I am not as fond of, I can always find something about them that I like. The Doctors Daughter, The Lazarus Experiment, Love and Monsters and The End of Time: Part One are my least favourite episodes, but there is still an aspect of each one I like- I therefore find it hard to label a series as anything, as no series is a black and white picture of good/bad, enthralling/dull etc.

Sorry about the essay

Not to mention The End of Time, where not only the universe would be destroyed, but all of time as well!

I think RTD did fall into the action-adventure sequel trap - in that you always need to have the next climax outmatch the previous one. Eventually you reach a point where you just can't get any bigger!

So it is kinda necessary to scale back and start building up to something big all over again. It's either that or end the story for good.

Yeah I'm with you. Was looking forward to it but it's been a bit of a letdown so far. Hopefully it'll pick up soon.

I started a similar thread last night and got so much abuse the moderator closed the thread down.

Must agree - for the first time ever I'm bored and disconnected from the show.

I hope it picks up soon. I do like Doctor 11 and Amy - just waiting for a really good story!

Nope, that's precisely why it isn't stale. It's a breath of fresh air. Fake sentiment does not compensate for shoddy plotting.

Why do we need to be continually looking back? Returning enemies: great. Returning companions: not so great. Once in awhile it's a special treat, all the time it just gets tedious.

I'm not really finding it boring, but I'm finding I'm not as excited about watching new episodes than I have been in the past.

Episode 1 was great, 2 and 3 haven't reached the same heights but wouldn't say dull.

Wasn't convinced at how quickly they modified those spitfires last night though WTF?

Yes - I thought there needed to be an extra line. Something like "I've been working on a project secretly for a few months . . ." just to explain how it could be developed so quickly.

I do agree with this. I am loving the fifth series, although I would have cut back on the number of returning enemies I think (still, I suppose with a new cast and a new look, the series does need something the viewer can familiarise with).

To clarify though, I think that some viewers will see the lack of sentimentality as being a sign of a stale show, when it is in fact the opposite. Like someone else said, it is like a new beginning and we will build up to an all new BIG conclusion in a number of years from now.

Thing is though it doesn't need to look back yet, as it supposed to be a fresh start....I mean how much of series one was looking back???So come the fourth series by Moff...don't be suprised if he too does what RTD did in his last tenure....for goodness sake Moff was already showing a great deal of sentiment to his own writing styles in the Libraray two parter which were nothing more than Greatest hits albums....and now we have the return of both River and the Weeping angels.....trust me....Moff will do the same.

As for the OP...well even though I haven't enjoyed two out of three stories so far...I still don't know what the future holds...so I am not bored by any means of the series, especailly as I still discovering what Matt's Doctor is all about.

He didn't say he'd got a load of them all ready to launch, he talked as if it was all just theory, no more than at the idea stage.

I vote we ask for this thread to be locked now. I don't honestly see how anyone else can possibly top such an insightful, intelligent and well thought out post as this one. My compliments on the composition too, truly a literary gem.

Totally disagree. I know The Beast Below wasn't the best Episode in the world but last Night's episode put the series back on track and I think the series can only get better. I think Series 4 started of a bit lacklustre but look how it picked up towards the end, loved the last quarter of that series, blew me out of the water. I think this series is having a slow build up to what will hopefully be another cracking finale.

I will say it is taking time to adjust to Matt Smith and all the changes. That's nothing against Matt Smith, who's proving to be a good Doctor. It's just that the changes are so widescale sometimes it's hard to take them all in and I think the fact there's been very few references back to the Era before has made the series all that bit stranger. Hopefully with the forthcoming episodes that will change.
