Have never posted on the Dr. Who site and have spent most of the day proselytising for the left on the Politics site (without much success of course).

But... I really like the new Dr. Who, the new Daleks and all the new episodes. I particularly enjoyed yesterday's programme.

What I am most keen on is that it has gone back a bit more to the 70s style.

Ta very much. I expect the arguments will be much more heated here than over with the Politicos.

I appreciate Moffat as a writer of stories but have to admit that so far, after 3 episodes, I am begining to have my doubts as to his abilities as a producer. Time will tell, I'm not giving up yet.

Steven Moffat needs to hire a new alien creator tbh. They all have the same teeth.

Hold on-why have you been checking the design department's teeth?

He's not the only producer. Maybe blame Piers & Beth too.

I will hapily blame Piers Morgan for anything.

I think that the generally non-vocal majority should have a chance to stand up and say and " We appreciate the efforts you and the rest of the team have put in to this series".
This isn't brown-nosing, it's simply a chance for those of us who love the series to say Thank you.
(Although I fear this thread will be hijacked by the nay-sayers who will prove my point..)”

Oh, dear, I really, really want to agree with you - but fear I am starting to have my doubts. Prior to this season, I've loved SM's scripts for Who. I also really enjoyed The Eleventh Hour, as long as I ignored the ripping-off of Smith and Jones. The Beast Below, alas, I found underwhelming and po-faced.

But what's really concerning me - as I wrote on another thread - is the decline in production values. For the first time since its return, Dr. Who looks cheap and shabby and nowhere was this more obvious than in VotD. There's still so much to enjoy this year - not least Smith and Gillen - but the jury's still out for me, I'm afraid, and that surprises me. Here's hoping the series gets into its stride proper soon.

I loved the moff's work in the past 4 series, but i've been saying this all weekend, i love the new tardis, i love the new HD 5.1 sound, i'm starting to warm to the new doctor, ( always takes me a few episodes to get into a new doctor )

BUT there is something that is missing from this new series, I want to love it and will still watch it, but it has lost something that the last 4 series had, I don't know if it's the pace or the style, but i'm not getting that ingrossment feeling i have been having over the last 4/5 years. And from what i've been reading i'm not the only one

I was really looking forward to the moff taking over, his past episodes have been my all time fav's, i thought if anyone can make it even better he's the man, peep's might say it's early days but time will tell.

This sums up exactly how I feel. Doubtless we'll be pounced on. We'll be denounced as naysayers. But I'm afraid I can only say what I feel. I love Dr. Who; have done for 40 years and even stuck with it (often through gritted teeth) when it was in its death throes in the late 80s. I want SM to succeed because if he succeeds, so does the show. I remain optimistic that he will. But I agree; something is missing at the moment.

I feel exactly the opposite. For me, this series Doctor Who regained something indefinable that it had lacked for the last few years. It feels more like the show I grew up with.

Dodgy scripts? Plot holes? Loads of continuity errors?

No, I think it's gotten rid of most of those...

Well if you think that, you obviously haven't been watching as closely as you claim!

From what I know of the RTD era from the Writer's Tale, the functions of Piers and Beth are distinctly different from the showrunner's. He really has the creative control and comes up with the ideas. Their functions are in executing his vision, budgeting, dealing with the BBC, etc. You'll never see either of them with a writing credit.

I think Moffat has a greater strength than RTD at plot, while RTD is stronger in characterisation.

With respect, I believe this is the last thing it needs to be. Doctor Who died in the 80s because it was increasingly made for the die-hard fans not the general audience. No show can afford to do that. I have a vague, but horrible, sense of deja vu that this might, just might, be a path we're heading down again.

I don't agree, and so far the general public aren't exactly switching off. But if you're right, c'est la vie. At least we'll get a decent series or two first which I'll thoroughly enjoy re-watching as I do my classic series episodes.

I don't think that's the case. For one thing, it's the fans who are the ones complaining. Whatever other problems there may be, there's been no return to days of old.

The ratings seem to be quite healthy, so far.

In what way apart from the obvious Tardis exterior and Matt's Doctor being a bit like Troughton (although for me Tennant also had lots of four, five and two in him as well as what made him uniquely Ten) is this series anymore like the calssic than the last five years were....

In the last three stories there have been plenty of Plot holes and continuity errors...so no point in denying it.....and have been constantly pointed by others, even those who have been paying attention before you throw that in my face....Doctor Who has always had plot holes. And as for dodgy scripts I'd argue Satrurday's show was.....so that is mainly subjective...

Nope, but it's nice to be on the same side as the masses for once.

Yes I would endorse that.

It has returned to its roots. The soapy feel has been eschewed and the plots now rule.
