How can people hate Mariah but like Whitney?
I mean, "I'll always love you" and "Its not right but its okay" were alright, but Whitney's music is so boring compared to Mariah's 90's stuff.
People also accuse Mariah of being a bit of a diva, but Whitney, while high on something, wouldn't even let X Factor contestents touch her last year to shake hands with them. I agree that both singers should have retired in the year 2001 because they have both been gash since, however, I don't understand how someone can bash Mariah into the ground but Whitney doesn't get the same treatment. |

The X Factor
I kinda agree. Mariah's masterclass was more relaxed, Whitney had Clive and didn't interact with the contestants much. Mariah hugged the contestants.

They are BOTH very charitable people, especially Mariah, half the stuff she does doesn't get reported about, so I don't understand why it's seen as a big thing that she hugged a contestant.
![]() I don't think it's got anything to do with their music though. Mariah's supposed demands get reported, compared to Whitney who hasn't been active that much the past decade. As a musician, Mariah writes, composes, produces all of her songs, so based on that alone, she should get more respect than Whitney, who is a manufactured artist. Having said that, for me, they are two of the most gifted singers ever. |

I think it's just down to style of singing. Whitney's voice sounded more pure compared to Mariah's, who uses her whisper register a lot.
I don't see why either of them should have retired in 2001. IMO, some of Mariah's best music was made in the last decade. |

I like both, but prefer Mariah. I don't agree that they should have retired in 2001 either. If they had, Mariah wouldn't have released The Emancipation Of Mimi.

How about at the start of her career up till about 1996, she was pretty much just singing straight. Yep, I think alot of people find the whispery style quite pretentious.
I think Mariah's tone just grates more, although I do prefer her to Whitney. But Whitney's tone in the 1980's was the nicest tone recorded, IMO. |

I don't think Mariah deserves half the stick she gets. I think she's started to laugh along with the 'diva' label recently too. I personally don't think she is any more of a 'diva' then half the celebs going, but she always seems to get real bad press over it.

Don't really like either of them. I can see a difference between them though and on vocals alone find Whitney less irritating. However I prefer Mariah as a person.

Have any of you seen the episode of Oprah when Mariah and Whitney were on it?
Mariah hardly got a word in edge ways. It was quite funny. |

Though Mariah had recently suffered her vocal fallout, I don't consider Whitney to be over shadowing her there... I way appreciate Whitney's talent but Mariah's shown herself to be even better for me if you take everything they've done into account.
In response to saying Mariah's grating, I think this certainly can't be said about the first part of her career, the creamy, elastic vocals on things like this are very pleasing to the ear not to mention out of this world (ever wondered if Mariah can scat?: 9:11 onwards should tell u! Though the whole track is awesome): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CCJqnN_Hy8 |

I can't believe that she hasn't had a tribute concert to her by BET etc. Whitney, rightfully had two, and deserves them. So has Mary J Blige, eventhough she started her career 2 years after Mariah's 5th number one single Also, two years ago, Whitney made a surprise appearance to give an award at the Grammys to Jennifer Hudson, and she got a standing ovation. I unfortunately don't think Mariah would ever get a standing ovation - she really deserves it, she has done so much more musically than Whitney, ever has or ever could.

Whitney's had better songs than "I Will Always Love You" and "It's Not Right But It's Okay" e.g. I Wanna Dance With Somebody, Queen of the Night, How Will I Know, Million Dollar Bill, Greatest Love of All, All the Man That I Need.
(I like both her and Mariah though) |

I think Whitney has those signature songs (I Will Always Love You, I Wanna Dance etc.) while Mariah hasn't ever really had that huge song which everybody knows and calls a classic.
I love both but I prefer Mariah, she is a lot more talented and has a beautiful personality. |

I can see why people may not like Mariah's voice, the whistle register may irritate people. Whitney just sang in a normal way, whereas Mariah's songs in the 90's had lots of high notes and key changes in them, I can see why some people might find that annoying and think that Mariah was showing off.
As a fan of Mariah I obviously like her voice and her personality. I think people might think Mariah changed because she started out as as the demure next door type and then changed into something else. This again may irritate people. Whitney has stayed the same more or less since she started (minus the drugs of course). I think if people actually watched an interview with Mariah Carey instead of listening to all the crap the press write about her they would see that she is Normal and a nice person. I find it irronic because Whitney has always come across to me in interviews as a bit rude but she never gets any negative comments. Personally I like them both, but Mariah a lot more. |

It's funny, I've never bought a single or album of hers, not even one, and some of her songs were so popular they got on my wick - but I went to her concert with my cousin (who's abig fan) and it was unbelievable. She just seems like a very normal, grounded person which is amazing when you consider she has been performing since she was 9. She's never had to rely on looks or wild stories, it's always just been about the voice. I can respect that her style of singing may not be to everybody's taste though. |

They're both as nutty as squirrel poo.
But I prefer Mariah's madness to Whitney's. |
