Why direct debit needed?

A acquaintance of mine have been looking at Bt Vision, he already got Bt broadband and can't get sky due to the fact they won't allow a dish where he lives.

Now, because he is sometimes away from home for a week or two at a time and then back home for a week or two he don't want a subscription, which is why I thought BT vision would be ideal.

so he went for the box for £90, but they want direct debit info from him, which he don't think they need. If he is just buying the odd show, why don't they take the cost from his credit card and not direct debit? He is now deciding what to do.

Direct Debit makes double and treble billing a lot easier for them.

1/ Because they can.

2/ Its in the t&c's....... and because they can.

3/ A credit card transaction will cost BT approx 50p in processing fees..... and because they can!

so why can't they do it via the phone bill? i noticed they stopped that now, but this person still pay for his broadband with his phonebill.

If he's already got BT Broadband, then surely they already have his direct debit info.

Also Direct Debit doesn't mean they will take money from him every month, they will just take what is owed as and when. Direct Debit is I'm afraid a safeguard for them.

Don't listen to the man who thinks he knows best because he is simply biased against BT.

No, because he pays for his broadband with his phone bill, I think Bt have stopped doing that now with new customers as a friend of mine was told last year that she had to pay for broadband by direct debit, but for custome5rs that already pay via their phone bill can still do so.
Also Direct Debit doesn't mean they will take money from him every month, they will just take what is owed as and when. Direct Debit is I'm afraid a safeguard for them.

i don't think the bank account he have allows direct debits.

BT Vision is billed under a separate account/account no. to the Phone and Broadband, and by a separate department - hence the need to take bank details again.

I never had one problem with BT billing for my phone and/or Broadband.

BT Vision billing was totally different though - and as I alluded to above, I was quite often double and treble billed for monthly viewing subs (Bronze), which I then had to chase them for refunds.

have you not considering using the direct debit guarantewe which basically means if the originator (BT) mnakes an error, you are entitled to a full refund of the amount that was taken? I have just had to use the DD Guarantee in the last week after Scottish Power took more money than was agreed via my monthly DD (and I got a goodwill credit when i complained about it)

Ah, OK, I always pay everything (including my phone bill) by Direct Debit so I probably made assumptions.

No, I wasn't refering to you. You don't have to be a "genius" to work out who though
