As stated on the main Football Commentators thread, BBC Radio 5 Live will be announcing their team for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Here's a seperate thread for discussion on the commentators and coverage of the 2010 World Cup.

Good idea for the thread

As I said, I don't expect any major surprises tomorrow.

No, I don't expect too many surprises for the BBC's team of commentators at the World Cup, but there may be one or two shocks for the co-commentary team. I think Mick McCarthy has revealed he'll be involved as well as Robbie Savage too.

I wouldn't mind seeing Steve McClaren involved this time, if not on Five Live elsewhere, after he was Five Live's "big signing" at Euro 2008.

I didn't like how they brought him in two years ago - not because "he'd let England down" or any of the more emotive things said against Five Live bringing him in, rather because I saw their reasoning for calling him up as simply being a publicity stunt to attract media attention at the expense of superior, long serving co-commentators.

But two years on, with him on the verge of winning the Eredivisie title with Twente, I think Steve is now a much more credible pundit on world football than most.

For a start he would be an authoritative summariser on matches involving the Netherlands (for obvious reasons) and Switzerland (for who his star striker at Twente, Blaise N'Kufo, leads the line).

Honestly wouldn't mind hearing him on Five Live, talkSPORT or TV this year, as unfashionable as that might be.

Yes, that accent he has.

Want to hear him come out with "How do you say, massive underdogs?" to his bemused co-comm Greenie who's just been slagging off 'disgrace that they were able to qualify for the tournament' North Korea.

In fairness though, as daft as his accent may be, surely someone who has managed his side to the Dutch championship (or at least got extremely close to doing so) and is relatively articulate would make an acceptable pundit/summariser on Netherlands matches?

The same applies to Roy Hodgson, I know some people don't rate him as a pundit purely because of his voice, but personally I'd love to see/hear him working as a pundit with any UK broadcaster this summer as he is so knowledgeable and intelligent.

Yes, fair point on Steve - I'll take him and just be glad my World Cup coverage won't be geoblocked for once.

Have you seen/heard Roy much this season on UK media? I heard some numpties the other day (may have been Murray & Groves or similar) having a go at his pronunciation of 'semifinal' , said more like 'semifinarl'. It's called linguistic interference, boys.

It's a very strong line up Five Live have there. Good to hear David Pleat, Chris Waddle and Graham Taylor amongst the co-commentators; I had thought one or all of them might have gone with a TV broadcaster but TV's loss is radio's gain.

Shame Jacqui Oatley will be heard but her name is very low on the list so it won't be on any high profile matches. Surprised to see Alro White return from his American adventures.

I'd imagine you'll only hear Mike Ingham on England games and after England get knocked out, the highest profile game in the relevant round then the final.

I would imagine the last 3 will only be heard on Sports Extra and the very low prodile games (Chile vs Honduras etc).

Mark Chapman must be highly rated given his swift rise to WC presenting!

DB is on the team [severely underused] and to add insult to injury they give 606 to Green. What a bunch of morons.

I disagree, I can't stand Baker and never understood the fuss around him.

606 with Green is always a good listen

Can't believe someone actually agrees with me on these matters!

What is there to like about a repetitive fat cockney motormouth w@nka like DB? Greenie sticks to football and never pulls his punches - it's (some of) the callers who should be hammered.

Baker clearly appeals to the 30-40's male Southern ex-hooligan brigade

I am convinced Ian Dennis will succeed Mike Ingham as correspondent at some point

Intresting Arlo going the MLS are having a break for the world cup between June 10th and June 25th and with him being last on the list I guess that means he could be thier just for the group stage games and then go back to the states.

I wonder will they use the style he has been using in the states for his games with his commentating on his own

I guess he could also present some of the rubbish games they will chuck him

They seem to be grooming him for that although I'm not sure he will be commentating on the big games once Ingham and Green retire.

When Green and Ingham go I think Dennis will become lead correspondent and number 3 commentator but John Murray and Simon Brotherton will be number 1 and 2

Yes I think you are right, John Murray, I feel will take the senior commentator role alongside A.N Other with possibly Ian Dennis doing more of a Jonathan Legard role or maybe one similar to Bryon Butler, in that he rarely commentated on the big domestic games but pretty much covered all England matches. Interesting about Arlo White, I dare say there’s a door still open to him at the BBC and maybe we could see him back during the MLS off season. I always thought he was going to be TMS bound but I doubt he’ll get much opportunity to cover cricket now

That depends on if Brotherton wants to just do TV or just do radio, you can't be 5Live's number 2 commentator and still fulfil MOTD commitments IMO.

Connor McNamara or even Darren Fletcher will be internal candidates if Brotherton sticks to TV.

There's a couple of contentious statements!

For what it's worth, as a proud Midlander, Danny Baker is one of the few presenters who still gets me tuning into Five Live these days. On the other hand, I'd rather pour boiling water into my ears than listen to Alan Green, be it on 606 or as a commentator.

As for Arlo White, personally I think the World Cup will prove to be just a brief return for him while the MLS is on a mid-season break.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's going to be out there covering the World Cup as a reporter for a North American broadcaster as well, and will only really be helping out with the odd commentary during the group stage (maybe a fair few from the final round of group matches when you have games coming thick and fast).

Anyone know when talkSPORT will be releasing details of their World Cup coverage?

This very much suggests that Jamie Carragher won't be in South Africa for talkSPORT, but in the UK: http://www.cafesportsengland.com/caf...ts-promotions/
