An interesting piece from Ian Danter's blog @ http://www.iandanter.co.uk/blogs/world-cup-13610-day-3

Quote:
“My first two commentaries are done and dusted for talkSPORT here - the less said about France 0-0 Uruguay the better, but today in Ellis Park it was a total delight to sit alongside Mickey Quinn, Adrian Durham and our producer Ant to call the Argentina/Nigeria game. Such an open match, and Messi was at his imperious best wriggling through challenges like a salmon trying to escape the grizzly bear's jaws as it leaps upstream. That said, Nigeria's goalkeeper had something of a worldy keeping him out several times with terrific saves. Can't see Argentina winning the whole thing - dodgy defending at times for me, but they have the win they needed.

We had such a great commentary spot too - right on halfway in a box just in front of BBC1's guys. talkSPORT once covered a World Cup 'unofficially' by commentating on games from hotel rooms as they didn't have rights to be in the stadiums or official broadcast centres. That was yonks ago, and yet there are some who think we STILL use hotel rooms. Well we do, but only to sleep in. It's great to have official coverage from South Africa and give the UK radio audience a real choice of listening for this tournament.”

Alan Green has just taken over and said that for the first 20 mins he's been working with a local technician as his microphone was not working.

And that vuvuzelas won't get banned but crisps & wine gums are a real no go (see Waddler for details).

Really good to hear Graham Taylor on 5live this afternoon, he has a lot of wisdom!

Was lucky enough to have him interviewed for our podcast recently (http://wordsfailmepodcast.blogspot.c...june-2010.html) and he wishes he could have another chance managing England after all the experience he has had since, I wonder if an ex-England manager will ever be given a second chance?

Thats Interesting what Danter says there because it was pretty obvious that Rawling and Gould were doing the Ghana v Serbia game "Off Tube". Whether they were in a hotel room or a Broadcast Centre I do not know though.

Not been around for a while folks, had an illness in the family. Can hardly receive talkSPORT on the west Wales coast so haven't been able to listen to their covereage, am heading back to the midlands later so will hear some this week as I will be at work. Five Live's coverage has been fine so far for me. Was John Rawling any good this afternoon on TS?

I thought it was Rawling's best talkSPORT commentary actually. Quite impressed, despite having an utter buffoon co-commentating in Bobby Gould. Possibly one of the worst I've ever heard on national radio. Stumbling over words, giggling and being silly because he can't pronounce foreign names. Rawling sounded a little miffed when he had to keep correcting him. But, yeah, he was a lot better than his off-tube commentary of Unirea v Liverpool in the Europa League a couple of months ago.

talkSPORT are not using hotel rooms to provide commentary.

Good, I am pleased (with Rawling, not Gould). JR gets a lot of stick in the TV Comms thread and the one game I heard him do on TS he struggled a bit, but i've always been a fan of his

Really enjoyed Murray and McNamara so far tonight, very good goal calls from both and they've both had some good banter with Robbie Savage who I think has also been decent.

I expect 5 Live will mix up the commentary teams but I'd like to hear more of this combination.

Conor said he's doing the Italy match tomorrow evening.

I think they are the 2nd most senior pairing after Green/Ingham. Savage is decent too.

Jan Molby is doing Holland vs Denmark tomorrow, no surprise there

This is being discussed on the TV thread:

Sky Sports News Radio: http://www.skysports.com/radio

What is Sky Sports News Radio ?
It's a new online radio service, available as a live stream. Backed by the newsgathering operation that has made Sky Sports News the destination for breaking sports news and interviews, SSNR exists to turn great telly into great radio. It is free to skysports.com user. While other radio stations mix news and sport or rely heavily on phone-ins we'll be broadcasting wall-to-wall sports news from the market-leaders, Sky Sports News.

When does it broadcast ?
Initially SSNR is broadcast live between 8am and 6pm although these hours will be extended when England are in World Cup action. From August, the stream will be available 24/ 7. Non-Sky subscribers who can't view Sky Sports News can now hear it. What's more, they can do it from the comfort of their home or workplace. Many employers bar video but allow audio streaming.

Thanks for the detail Shaun, and thanks for the IPlayer tip Col.

I didn't think to check there, but as you say they are archiving the commentaries on the IPlayer.

Well said and I'm sure all of the constructive, helpful and interesting contributors to this thread would agree with you.

You can tell if they are at the game because there commentary is ahead of the TV pictures. When the commentary is behind the TV pictures that usually means its off tube. Although of course you do need access to a TV at the time to tell that so if out and about in a car you can't.”

Indeed, I'm pretty sure that game was off-tube as we've been told that Nigel Pearson is working from the UK (hence his reduced role) due to his Sky Sports speedway and darts commitments.

The other games on Friday or Saturday were done by Jim Proudfoot, Stan Collymore, Ian Danter, Alvin Martin and Micky Quinn - all of whom we know are on-site, as is proved by the many pictures on the talkSPORT website. So we can safely say they were at the grounds for those games.

Speaking of which:

I think someone's been reading this thread and shares my frustrations.

Keep up the great work Dants!

What I found interesting was how it was Rawling and Gould doing that game while Danter and Martin did Algeria v Slovenia on-site, rather than vice versa.

Surely it would have made more sense to switch these pairings around as a) Pretoria is far closer to Johannesburg than Polokwane and b) Ghana v Serbia looked to be the better game on paper.

Murray is no doubt number 3 but Ian Dennis is surely above Conor in the eyes of 5 Live bosses and even though he is working for TV at this World Cup Brotherton has had bigger commentary's on 5 Live than Conor.

I rate Conor alongside Darren Fletcher at 5 Live as commentators who's stars will rise when the old guard of Green and Ingham leave the station

I've just checked out the latest blog on Nigel Pearson's personal website, which lists his schedule across talkSPORT and Sky Sports during June and July.
You can read it here: http://www.nigelpearson.co.uk/news.php?extend.78

Nigel will only be commentating on nine World Cup games for talkSPORT, four of which are final group games and just one is from the knockout stages.

They are:
Sat 12: South Korea v Greece
Tue 15: Ivory Coast v Portugal
Wed 16: Spain v Switzerland
Thur 17: France v Mexico
Tue 22: Nigeria v South Korea
Wed 23: Australia v Serbia
Thur 24: Denmark v Japan
Fri 25: Switzerland v Honduras
Sat 26: Winner Group A v R/U Group B

Going by that, I expect the Proudfoot/Collymore and Danter/Martin pairings will have a very hectic schedule.

I disagree, he ain't above Ian Dennis, look at the domestic games he covers and you can see a pattern. Dennis is Cheif Football Reporter, he'll never be a full time commentator with that role.

Brotherton is probably 4th but mainly only for CL games, the rest of the time it's McNamara

Hot on the heels of Nigel's itinerary, Dants has posted his schedule in his latest blog: http://www.iandanter.co.uk/blogs/my-world-cup-schedule

It is:
FRI 11th June - France vs Uruguay 1930 BST
SAT 12th - Argentina vs Nigeria 1500 BST
SUN 13th - Algeria vs Slovenia 1230 BST
MON 14th - Italy vs Paraguay 1930 BST
TUE 15th - Hosting 1900-2300 BST show featuring Brazil vs N Korea
WEDS 16th - South Africa vs Uruguay 730BST
FRI 18th - Slovenia vs USA 1500 BST
SAT 19th - Ghana vs Australia 1500 BST
MON 21st - Hosting 1200-1700 coverage of Portugal vs North Korea & Chile vs Switzerland
TUE 22nd - France vs South Africa 1500 BST
WEDS 23rd - Hosting 1900-2300 for conclusion of Group D
THURS 24th - Cameroon vs Holland 1930 BST
FRI 25th - Spain vs Chile 1930 BST

***More to come once knockout stages have been decided***

In short, that's (at least) 10 commentaries with three presenting gigs during the group stage alone. He gets the day off on Thursday and Sunday!

Some of talkSPORT's plans for tomorrow were announced during the phone-in. Stan Collymore will be co-commentating on Italy v Paraguay in Cape Town. Adrian Durham presenting, Ian Danter on the commentary.

Mark Saggers is presenting noon-5pm from Soccer City in Johannesburg where Denmark v Netherlands will be taking place. Jim and Alvin on the commentary for that one most probably.

Brotherton last season had an increase in the amount of games he did in the second half of the season he was working for MOTD on the Saturday and 5 Live on the Sunday. He also covered the Europa League Final for 5 Live. But on reflection maybe Dennis is not above McNamara but below Green Ingham Murray and Brotherton there is a pool of commentators compeating to be Number 3 commentator when Green and Ingham go with them being Darren Flechter Conor and Ali Bruce Ball all compeating to be Number 3.

I listened to the last 20 minutes or so as I was driving so heard McNamara and Savage. I've never been a fan of Savage as a player but whenever I've heard him on commentary I've been impressed, as you say there was some entertaining banter between him and McNamara. He was also hosting 6-0-6 with Mark Pougatch straight afterwards.
