I have now had the Panasonic DMR-XS350 Twin tuner Freesat hi-def PVR (with DVD recorder as well as hard-drive) for about 3 weeks & am very pleased with it. However, when going to access some of the recordings for play back, I am being asked to input the PIN number that applies to programmes "for parental guidence" - marked with a G. Now, I know what you are all thinking > that I have been recording violent movies or even the Babe Channels. However, this is not so. I am being asked to input the PIN before playing back Grif Rhys Jones in Rome or even Britain's Got Talent. This is quite ridiculous. Whoever is placing these 'markers' on such programmes needs to examine this policy. I certainly did not expect to have to input the PIN number for any of the kind of stuff that I watch!

You should be able to turn the guidance off, so you don't need to enter the PIN. That's usually part of the standard Freesat setup, and is also somewhere in the Panasonic menus.

Unfortunately, many parents (and cranks like MediaWatch UK) are so sensitive that anything with even a mild swearword has to get flagged these days.

Just wait until some of these nutjobs really get their way - last month MediaWatch (formerly Mary Whitehouse's bunch) suggested that perhaps no post watershed programmes should be allowed on catch up services like iPlayer. The reason? The scare-mongering Express "revealed" that not all parents set or know how to set a PIN for iPlayer, thereby exposing children to "BBC filth."

With unholy alliances like that, soon you might not have to worry about PINs; TV will have been dumbed down to the level of a five year old.

Be fair.

It would be terrible if a child heard a 'bad' word on the TV and then went and repeated it in the school playground.

I have just been back into the set up menu of this Panasonic PVR and could find no way of turning the PIN (for G marked programmes) off.

I just had a look at the operating manual (page 85) for this model on the Panasonic website and it seems that you can't disengage the pincode function but what you can do is to change the ratings code - setting it to 8 allows all DVD recordings to be played. Apparently the '8' setting (no restrictions) is the factory default setting - could it have been accidentally changed?
