The Eleventh Hour was brilliant and managed to successfully continue the show without doing it too much 'damage' (the theme tune, opening sequence, individual performances and the plotline have all been criticised by select people, but I see no problem with any of these really). It wasn't too taxing on the brain, which is good for an opener and had an air of freshness about it that the series 2, 3 and 4 openers failed to bring. I have watched this episode once and say for now that it is the best of the three episodes so far.
The Beast Below was a good monster-of-the-week episode that didn't really take the main characters anywhere, although the 'angry doctor' was shown to Amy. Of course, the episode ties in nicely with the UK election, but did feel like it was trying to cram in way too much. Still, it was the first episode since Midnight in 2008 that had just 45 minutes to tell its story. That said, it did an okay job and had a good supporting cast. After watching twice, I still rank it the least favourite of the three episodes so far but it surpasses the worst of Doctor Who by miles. I also found I enjoyed it more on second watch- something I have found with all Moffat episodes except Blink.
Victory of the Daleks had a lot to do in its 45 minute running time- more so, I feel, than the previous episode. Nonetheless, after a second watch, I feel that it was an okay episode, and that it was miles better after a second viewing. I think that people are either too harsh or too kind on it, as ViOTD falls nicely in the middle of dalek episodes we have had since 2005- not as good as the likes of Dalek or The Parting of the Ways, but not as bad as Daleks in Manhattan and Journey's End. The pacing was a little off, but I feel the right decision was made to have the daleks vanish relatively early on (I think it was around the 30 minute mark). We have had too many dalek stories in recent years, and it seems wise to limit them here, even if it was an episode about them. Finally, I am on the fence over the new dalek design. The white and blue work quite well, and possibly the yellow one, but having them all an assortment of colours seemed way too gimmicky. That said, I feel they are more accepted that it seems- there are a lot of people on this forum complaining about them, but a lot more people who are not on this forum have simply accepted the new design. I love the white dalek, and its deep voice too.
So, all in all, am so far loving the new series. Admittedly, the first episode remains the best, but it did have 60 minutes to tell its story, and the dalek episode did have a lot of continuity to deal with. I have a good feeling about the rest of the series, particularly the Weeping Angels story we have coming up. Cannot wait.
