Just had a quick look in my local Dixons (Falmouth, Cornwall), which, like 100 or so others, is closing in a couple of weeks.

If you are after any electrical items, and you have a Dixons closing near you, nows the time to buy.

Personally, I'm after a DAB portable radio (stereo). They had a Intempo and a Grundig both with over £40 off. The Grundig is now less than £50 (!), but is it any good?

Seems odd that everyone is bashing Grundig when they were one of the best equipment manufactuers around in the 70s and 80s. Far better than anything coming out of the UK. Of course they have now went bust so I wouldn't expect much of a warranty on their products!

The Grundig you mentioned isn't, alas, the Grundig of today!

With regard to the Grundig 'Opus' the original poster mentioned, Dixons group, apparently, bought several 'shed' loads of these sets. They then obtained the rights to 'place' the Grundig logo on. As Grundig, as such, are no more it was just a case of going to the rights holder or official receiver and paying the necessary.

To think that set retailed at £140 originally.
My wife got me one when they went to 'half price' for Christmas. It would only deliver the local mux - just . It then went back to Santa.

I was tempted to go and have a look at the bargains but I have decided to boycott them in the interests of all of the staff presumably laid off...

It is a shame for the staff - apparently some will get a move to other DSG stores, but most seem to be going I worked in a Comet (Renfrew branch) which shut down in February but all staff got moved elsewhere in the company so it wasn't so bad (apart from me and one other person who were Christmas temps). But since there's so many stores closing it's quite different.

On the subject of bargains WinXP for £45 (just got a Mac a month ago so little good) and Kameleon 4-in-1 remote control for £20 (I'll get one of those tommorow. This was the Braehead branch for anyone up here.

Two surprises on that list.

One is that the Keighley branch isn't closing as its possibly the worst store I have ever been in, cramped tiny and half filled with over priced PC's (sorry thats all Dixons stores ) and there is a Currys just down the road.

The second is that Hastings is, as there isn't a Currys nearby (well that I knew of last time I was there) Just another example of how crap the shopping centre in Hastings truly is. Its quite a big store too, but I suppose that just pushes up rent etc.

I had a look round my local branch (Livingston) earlier today. There was quite a bit of empty space where the bigger items used to be.

Not a single thing caught my eye, even the 50% off PS2/Xbox/PC games.

The only thing I may have even remotely considered buying was some blank DVD-R's but there were none to be had

Oh, and some of the stuff in there was still over-priced for what it was.

cheers for the list dan!

I see the local Retford store isnt closing - quite small, but theres no comet, no currys, and pretty much no competition here at all!

Also im not surprised they arent closing the MASSIVE dixons extra at Bullring in Brum!

I don't see any stores near me here in Bristol, and I ain't driving to hereford.

Shame about the Paddington store, I used to enjoy a mozy around there when my train was delayed, and they seemed to have some more unique stuff. Although it was cupboard sized!

Shame about them closing, and don't think much of what's left, the cheaper VCR's have gone anyway. DAB radios are still dead expensive apart from the Grundig. Still sad to see it go though. We Have got Curry's and Comet here in Wrexham though so not all bad, they're just a fair distance away from the town centre, that's all.
