I picked up the BBC Proms guide (available from today) at WHSmith today - had a little flick through it, and was a bit amazed at what they have lined up for the Last Night - this is the listing for the second half of the Last Night (to be conducted once again by Jiří Bělohlávek):

Chabrier Joyeuse marche (4 mins)
Smetana Dalibor – 'Dobrá! Já mu je dám! … Jak je mi?' (3 mins)
Dvořák Rusalka – Song to the Moon (6 mins)
Vaughan Williams Suite for viola and small orchestra – Prelude; Galop (6 mins)
Wagner Lohengrin – Bridal Chorus (5 mins)
Rodgers and Hammerstein Carousel – 'You'll never walk alone' (5 mins)
Hans Zimmer Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest – Hornpipe (3 mins)
Arne Rule, Britannia! (8 mins)
Parry, orch. Elgar Jerusalem (2 mins)
Elgar Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 in D major ('Land of Hope and Glory') (8 mins)
The National Anthem (2 mins)
There will be NO Fantasia On British Sea Songs (probably one of the best parts of the Last Night) this year - it will still be performed though, but has been 'relegated' to a night for a recreation of the Last Night of the Proms from 1910, on September 5 - and that "Hornpipe" from Pirates of the Caribbean is NOT the same Hornpipe!

I mean sure, we do still have some of the usual patriotic fayre to finish off, but why do they have to mess around with tradition? The Last Night of The Proms is probably one of the very few things we have left that hasn't been torn to shreds by the politically correct "it might offend" crowd, it just irritates me that they have to mess with tradition - if it's not broke, don't fix it!

I agree with all that you've said
I love Last Night of the Proms

Why does every tradition in this Country have to be curtailed because of Political Correctness
and whilst on the subject - where were all the red roses on the presenters today on TV, to commemorate St George's Day?

We stopped watching the Last Night of the Proms about 4 years ago.
It would appear that the BBC don't want people to watch it either, when they have stuff like Proms in the Park on at the same time.
I'm sure the BBC is run by 'children' which might explain BBC HD which seems to be BBC Glastonbury.
Have you seen how many Proms are on BBC HD this year.
I'll give you a clue - it's less than one.

I hate it and find it cringeworthy. All the middle Englanders waving their flags. ugh

This will be the 3rd year that the Fantasia will not be played on the Last Night. 2008 is also the year that Roger Wright controlled his first Proms season.

The Last Night is a chance for all to let their hair down and have a bit of a party, but there are 75 more (main) concerts before it.

Any in particular you're looking forward to?
