Other half decided to pick up a packet of this Birds Eye Simply Fish - was cod in a parsley sauce and we decided to give it a try since it was on offer at £3.

Not sure if I'm being stingy but the portion sizes just seemed pretty rubbish! The NORMAL price was £4 and I wouldn't pay that at all I don't think.

All in all it was a bit of a let down.

Anybody else feel the same? Or maybe I'm just being miserable

I've had the salmon ones and loved them, thought they were very easy to cook and loved all the sauce in it. I think they're worth the cost considering the time you'd spend making a sauce etc yourself.
I've had another one too but can't remember what it was, might have been pollock but I remember I really enjoyed it.
I want to try the prawns next.

I don't rate Birds Eyes premium fish products at all. Overpriced for what they are quality-wise.

I had the haddock one when they were first released - they were only £3 then here. But I have to agree the portion size is laughable, and the sauce is only a lemon and herb one - which could be made simply and quickly. So I really don't find the Haddock one value for money - it put me off buying the other ones as they are expensive for what they are in my opinion

I have never seen Cod in the Simply "Bake to Perfection" range though, so I think we are talking about a different range ain't we

I bought a Chunky Wild Pink Salmon Fillets with a lemon and herb butter sauce from the Baked to Perfection range when they first came out. Very small portions; sauce was much too salty.

You'd be better off buying some fish from the Waitrose counter and getting them to put it in the 'Garnish and Go' bag for you. Say you get a salmon fillet for £2.69 each or however many you need, they offer to put it in a special oven bag which is sealed up and you pop it in the oven at the right temperature and it's done in 12-18 mins depending on the weight of what you've bought. The garnish is free and you can choose from 4 different flavoured butters as well as fresh lemon and parsley. Much nicer than the Birds Eye thing.

I had the salmon one last night for my tea.
Actually, they were so small I had to have two !
Along with some sweetcorn and a couple of boiled salad potatoes.
I thought the fish was too firm and quite tasteless.
I had to add plenty of salt and a big knob of butter !
I've also had the pollack, and that was better.

I'd do that too, except we don't have a Waitrose anywhere near where I live.

It is, and they started doing it before Birds Eye brought out their 'Simply Cook' range or whatever it's called . Although it may cost a few pence more, it's certainly worth it because you can choose any fish you like, even small whole fish such as mackerel as they can gut, head and tail it and it will fit inside the bag. Also, with it being Waitrose it's all fresh fish and most of their fish isn't frozen in order to transport it - it's just kept very cold, at about 1 .C and we all know fish that has been frozen isn't ideal in comparison to fresh fish!

It's a shame you don't have a Waitrose near you Andy. But I do know they are expanding out their Convenience store estate with new ones cropping up in all sorts of places so you may be in luck soon

The salmon ones are lovely, the first time I got them on a 2-4-1 offer, and more recently I paid the normal price of £4. I agree with the op, I am not happy about that price for such a small portion, even though it is nice. So I don't think I will be getting it again unless it's on offer again.

Mum has given me a load of forzen salmon fillets as she went to Billingsgate fish market last week, so I am going to try and re create it using my own garlic butter and some lemon. I guess I will have to wrap it in foil to put it in the oven...it will be interesting to see how it will compare to the Birds Eye version.

Same here - the closest is 16 miles away. If you live in Birkenhead then that is about the same distance for you I am guessing to the Formby one.

The only way I get waitrose food is by ocado but I am assuming I can't get the fish put in the bag

While wandering through Iceland I had a look at the fish in sauce range currently being advertised. I pulled back the cardboard and from what I saw it would take 2 packs to make one decent meal, at £2 per pack.

But you have foil in a kitchen cupboard don't you? £2.69 per fillet is very expensive, just to have someone else wrap a piece of fish in foil for you and by doing it yourself at least you know what exactly is going in the garnish.

Go to a fishmonger - even the supermarkets fresh fish counter, get them to prepare the fish of your choice - headed, gutted, filleted, whatever.

Put the fish in a parcel made from foil or oven-proof paper as well as butter & your herbs of choice - fish goes well with lemon, dill, tarragon, lemon grass, garlic, etc, etc. - bake in oven.

Or for fresh 'oily' fish such as Herring or Mackerel just head & gut, slash the sides, rub in lemon & black pepper & grill/barbeque until the skin crisps up, but the inside is still moist.

Fish really is best when fresh & in season - for example eating barbecued sardines minutes after they are landed is one of lifes great pleasures, in my opinion..

Do they??

There is never anyone behind the fish counter at our Asda (hides in the back or something) so I tend to just walk off if I am there more than a couple of minutes but I saw no signs saying they do this sort of thing.

Do you just have to ask them to bag it or something?

Do you mean the ones advertised at the moment on tv - fish in a bag with herbed butter?

If so, then yes, although I have never had them I would assume, they are a rip off.

A fish fillet 'en papillote' is the easiest peasiest dish to make at home and would take perhaps 90 seconds longer than the pre-packed one.

If you don't have access to a fishmonger (I do and its fab but I appreciate not everyone does) ...then the four fillets of salmon for a fiver at Sainsbury's a hefty knob of butter and some dill and some tin foil is all you need..... dinner for four for about £1.60 a head.

I got some of these when they first came out. They were ok but not been back to them since.

Not great sizes and the problem I had was way too much sauce so when you open the bag you end up getting it over all the other stuff you have on the place !
