Who taught River Song her handy tricks?
Abomination
25-04-2010
So, after rewatching the episode and paying close attention to the dialogue, I noticed that River Song commented that she was taught by the best, however the Doctor 'wasn't around' that day.

On first viewing, I saw this as a sarcastic comment, but now I am wandering, could there be someone else important we are completely blind to here?

The doctor taught her, but she also taught him about the stabilisers. Now when he teaches her some time in the future he can teach her about the stabilisers, so that in her future she can teach him about the stabilsers. Errrrrrrrrrr...

I don't know whether to call this a paradox, or whether Moffat's infamous wibbly-wobbly timey wimey is more appropriate for the show now.

Has it been mentioned about the bit that was in The Sun's TV magazine that
Spoiler
River Song has been in prison for murder.

That must be in part 2.

I just her assumed her to mean that 11 wasn't around that day. One of the other versions of the Doctor she met taught her (possibly whichever one she met first?)

I have it on good authority that Jackie Tyler taught her to fly the TARDIS.

Let's face it, the Doctor's over 900. He's probably flying the TARDIS 30 km/h below the speed limit, with the left-turn signal flashing for the last 50 years.

I wonder whether she may be the Master's companion in her past/the Doctor's future. Hence the Doctor would not have helped her if he knew the truth. That'd explain her having a record of the Doctor (as the Master would've focused on the Doctor has the last known survivor of the Time War) and her knowledge of Time Lord ways.

Ha ha ha. The Type 40 is obviously the Gallifreyan version of the Nissan Micra mark 1

If you have the premise that River Song is

Spoiler
A future incarnation of the doctor

or :

Spoiler
A future incarnation of The Master (Good Version)

All the interaction seems to fit the bill.

I was thinking along those lines, out of the two I think the second is more probable.

Not sure if this should be in spoilers as its just a guess, but going to play safe:

Spoiler
We know that the Bishop said that if the Doctor knew who River was then he wouldn't help her, and River is clearly familiar with all things Timelordy.

One train of thought that I had was that somehow the JS Master re-escapes from the Time War, but is still leaking energy everywhere and badly needs to regenerate but can't as he doesn't have enough energy left.

So he goes to Donna Noble who he knows to be a meta-crisis half human-timelord hybrid, takes her regeneration energy killing her in the process and manages to regenerate. Because he used Donnas energy a bit of her dna gets mixed in resulting in the post JS Master being female.

The new AK Miss Master goes off doing unspeakably horrible things as per normal, until one final legacy of Donna is revealed, the drum beat in the Masters head is gone, ultimately resulting in the Master getting his/her sanity back. The result being a good version of the Master trying to come to terms with all the terrible things he/she previously did. The final act of redemption being self sacrifice to save the Doctor in the Library.

The Sun's TV Mag states that River has

Spoiler
Been in prison for murder.

But who has she killed?

River will only say that her victim was "the best man she ever met..."

I think Moffat likes putting a lot of these throw away lines in for fun and to just add more to the "River Song/ Doctor" future dynamic. I have a feeling most of them are never going to be explained and that Mofat has little intention of explaining them.

They're just there to add fun and mystery to the whole relationship

Which reminds me: How certain are we that "Prisoner Zero" was indeed the multiform?

I really don't think River is a time lady, wouldn't the Doctor be able to sense that she is one? I'm sure i've heard the Doctor saying he can sense other time lords, if there are any around him, except when they use the Chameleon arch and become human?

I would think that The Doctor did teach River about it, or possibly it could be Amy or one of the Doctor's future companions, depending on when River first meets the Doctor...

I think the more important question is, will The Doctor take on board River teaching him how to land the Tardis or will we still get the Tardis noise?
