To the point of him telling her the one thing he's never told anyone else - his real name? Just on her say so that they're really really close in the future?

Unless he tells her because he knows she has to earn his trust later in her time frame. Same with giving her the screwdriver.

I'd love for the Doctor to be fuming at River for

Spoiler
the reason she was in prison

and starts to walk away from her, only for him to start to fade - because he died in the Library so does not exist now. He then realises he has to tell her a couple of things even though he doesn't want to.

I'd quite like her to be Romana. Finally, someone of the Doctor's people who aren't villians of the story. It'd explain the whole wife thing, they have a long history together.

I dunno, maybe she's just River Song lol.

I honestly read that as Romania to start off with. I started to wonder how a character could turn into a country.

I'd love her to be a good timelord, but obviously there's something dark there because of her prison time, and the fact that she's done something which the Doctor would not approve of if he knew.

Not Belgium out on revenge for his being mean to it?

Well she's supposed to have been in jail
Spoiler
for killing the most important man in her life
which, if
Spoiler
it turns out to be him
he probably wouldn't approve of lol. Doesn't make her bad though I guess she may have her reasons...

It's about time Belgium fights back. Next up: France.

That's a good point.

Spoiler
I can't see the Doctor being too happy about that.

That sounds like what happened to Marty in Back to the Future.

River Song = future incarnation of lucy saxon, who could have been a time lady humanised and placed on earth.
-in SIL/FOD river says she has been to the end of the universe, the master takes lucy
-prison, in EOT lucy is in prison, no body is found or mentioned. Maybe the explosion injured her and even though she was "humanised", she regenerated.
-the "she murdered the most important man in her life" theory.......lucy shot the master

It needs to be someone who knows him and his name, loves him and would sacrifice theirselves for him. They also are a bit reckless, have a sense of adventure and know that he would do the same.

It's his mum.

I'm betting this too.

Build it up for a few years, then when the 12th Doctor turns up, we find out she used to be the Rani, and the Doctor in her future does something to protect him, and her to make her become the person she is in his past....

hmm in that case i'd find it more than a little disturbing seeing as she refers to him constantly as "sweetie"

Love the idea and it sort of adds up, but I just have a feeling it'll be something that nobody has guessed yet.

I still say that fits the Master perfectly.

I love all the theories! It occurred to me during the episode that she might be the Doctor himself, or his daughter, but then other things seemed to negate that.

I wouldn't be surprised if she is Prisoner Zero, but I doubt it's that easy.

What really excited me was that line about learning from the best, but Eleven was busy that day. To me that seemed to point to a multi-Doctor episode in the future during which one of the other Doctors (a future one, since he knows all these extra things about the TARDIS that Ten and Eleven didn't know) teaches River to pilot the TARDIS. I'm probably overthinking it a bit.

There is a Christian tradition going back to the 4th century known as Penitents, where those who had committed serious sins confessed their sins to a bishop or his representative and were assigned a penance that was to be carried out over a period of time. After completing their penance, they were reconciled by the bishop with a prayer of absolution offered in the midst of the community.

Penance assumed many forms, such as pilgrimages to holy sites; constructing, repairing and rebuilding churches; and caring for the poor and sick.

So the Church could be hunting down Angels because they are very, very dangerous, and Song could be working for the Church to pay off her past sins.

Basically she could be on community service

Surely that's risking a paradox if 11 teaches Song about TARDIS stabilisers and brakes in his future/her past, but the only reason he knows about them is because she taught him about them in his past/her future!
