Hi

Just wondered if anyone has a preferance or can say which are better. I'm off to a stinky posh wedding and am going to get them done as my nails are quite shabby just now. But I've never had false nails before as they have always been quite nice.

Anyone have any thought?

Oh and if you have seen any frocks that you think would be good for a wedding feel free to suggest. I'm a bit Morticia Adams and aparrently I need something....well not black or red!

No no! No false nails ever, particularly not to a posh wedding! (Imo)

Just go to a good manicurist & get her to really moisturize & treat your nails - with good cuticle cream etc - she will be able to neaten them, don't worry. Then do them short as necessary to get them neat, with a pretty colour.

I have just had acryllics put on mine, but that's because I'm a nail biter and my nails aren't strong enough for gels.

If you have nails I would say the same as Christa, but if you really want to go for the false option, gel nails are better for for your nails.

Also for dresses, try phase eight, they have some really lovely dresses

Hi I have had both
I prefer the look of acrylic nails and have them done regularly.
I have pink and white which is the tips done in white acrylic and the rest in a deep pink (I love them).
The other way it to have the normal acrylic and then they are painted with the white tip (these are cheaper but don't last as long).
Whether you have gel or acrylic your natural nails will be soft, brittle an possibly damaged (until they grow out approx 6 months).
It is possible to find a nail technician who hand files your nails instead of using the dremel drill (most of the nail bars use the drill)this is a lot better for your nails however this is usually a lot more expensive and time consuming , however saying that I have had mine handfiled and my nails were still weak underneath perhaps not quite as bad as if they had been drilled but still not good.
If you are just having them for one occassion and were thinking of having them taken off immediately then I strongly advise against having them as your natural nails underneath will be very thin and easily breakable.
If it is for a one off occassion then perhaps a silk wrap might be better for you as they are designed to actually strengthen your nail, have a read of this

Never ever go for false nails, false nails always look like false nails and they always leave natural nails in a sorry state.

In my opinion a nice, natural, fresh, french manicure on natural short nails always look nicer, cleaner and classier.

Thanks to everyone that answered. I didn't appreciate that having either done woud impact on the condition of you nails for so long, so have opted for a professional maincure.

Thanks for the suggestion of phase eight. I went in yesterday and tried some on but my daughter just laughed and said I looked like the teacher from Glee. The sad (or funny thing) was I kind of did as I have red hair.

Today we're venturing to Coast and Monsoon so we'll see how that goes. Dont know why people have this stupid pastel thing for weddings, they should appreciate you as you are lol.

I agree totally. False nails are a no no. They damage your nails. Apart from anything else, they always look nothing but false.

I agree. Each to their own and all that - but I just think false nails, especially with the white tips just look so tacky

I have had nails on for over 5 years now (not the same set obviously lol!) - I have tried silks, acrylic, gel and I currently have was is called acrygel (I'm not sure if all nail places do these!) - they are by far the best type I've ever had - very strong (which is good as I'm quite heavy handed) - I go for infills every 2/3 weeks and have a new set on every 3/4 months. My natural nails underneath are in exactly the same condition as before I had extensions on! There is no problems with yellow or brittle nails or any such thing!

Definitely avoid these places that use electric drils etc - they are so harsh on your hands. The very first set of nails I had on about 10 years ago where done in one of these places and when I went back for the first set of infills I came out with every single nail cuticle bleeding! (and none of them could speak English either!)

My nails look very natural - I don't have them stupidly long - they just look really smart and tidy! I love them and would never ever have them off anymore

Do you REALLY know that though ? I mean, surely they replace the old with the new nails immediately, so you dont get the chance to study your natural nails.

I have acrylics for about 5 years. I finally got bored with them, plus they started breaking a lot, and very very far down the nail making them massively painful.

I finally got them removed, and my nails have never fully recovered and its been over 5 years since they were removed.

My nails have ridges in them now, they are very thin and break easily and i have white damage marks on them.

I would never have acrylics, and i wish i never had them done in the first place as my nails were strong and lovely then.

I agree. Wear them by all means but dont kid yourself they won't do any damage.

Gluing, drilling and sanding something onto something as sensitive as your nail is never going to be healthy.

Well my nails are never drilled for a start! And I would never have them drilled! They are filed obviously and the gel if filed down when I have my infills done - butnever harshly so!

And I do know they're in good condition still as I had to have the off for a few weeks last year when I went into hospital (had to have them removed cos of the heart rate thing they put on your finger!)

I'm sure everyones different and some peoples nails do get damaged but I don't think you can categorically state that false nails or nail extensions damage everyones nails!

Like most things, it depends on the skill of the nail technician, I happen to think mine is very good and discusses everything with me as she does it.

For me, it's the only way I get to have nails, I don't bite the acrylics!

I wear fakes on nights out but as I work most days and not allowed to wear them in work i never get them done in salons because it would be a waste of money! I just use ones that I can put on myself and have found a really good nail glue and they stay on for days unless i soak them off

you can cut them and shape them and paint them then any colour you want. they're soo good! however if you want a french style manicure then revlon do really good ones - i got loads of compliments when i wore them - for about 8 pound and you can buy the kiss glue seperately for about 3 pound.

i use an acetone soak to remove my nails and theres never any damage done.
