Not really. While Amy doesn't have any relatives, she has Rory, who has known her her entire life and will definitely be appearing again.

There are almost certainly reasons why Amy doesn't have a family, and I strongly suspect they have more to do with compelling story reasons why she can't have a family, rather than a desire to keep clear of RTD's thing. If the next companion also doesn't have a family then it will be fair to say that's what Moffat is trying to do.

When the Earth is invaded by aliens on a massive scale once or twice a year (especially on Christmas), people are going to remember it. You can't just hit a reset button every time.

Doctor Who's script writers are among the cleverest in the business. But it's in a unique position. Other shows don't do massive alien invasions all the time.”

Simple. You don't script it in the first place. Or you set DW in the future. Or the past. Or on another world.

DW script writers are the amongst the worst in the business. Compare DW to shows like Lost, Heroes, Buffy etc. and DW looks like a joke. Sorry.

I've had a lot of problems with the last few series' of Who, but it's still streets ahead of those other shows you mention. Sorry.

Lost? Seriously, Lost? Or Heroes? Two of the most poorly written and unstructured things on telly.

Let's see, Heroes, a show that's haemorrhaged 4/5 of its viewers since its start and has been written off by every critic as well, versus Doctor Who, the only drama whose audience increases year over year and is the darling of critics still.

You strike me as someone who wants Doctor Who to fail. Not that you mean it that way, but you want to take away that which makes it a success. A big part of that is setting the big stories in a time and place the audience can identify with.

I genuinely do not want DW to fail! For me it is a mistake setting so many 'big' stories on present day Earth. I just find DW more believable when it flies under the radar so to speak.

As to viewing figures and critics, I have my own mind so I don't pay too much attention.

I stand by my opinion that Lost, Heroes & Buffy are far more compelling shows than modern DW. But I'm happy if people choose to disagree... I just think DW should be easily as good if not better.

Also to add to that, I think its fair to say that even though Moff may not have had a clear set family like RTD made for Amy....he still has played on those family tie emotions....that fact that Amy doesn't have parents is something that is addressed, not ignored, the fact that she feels attached to a face carved into an apple, because her mother used to do it, and then later on with this very apple the Doctor manages to gain Amy's trust. So the family link, and emotion is still there, but so far it is played in a different way....but yes she still has Rory, and there is the rum,our that her aunt will make an appearence, and actually the people of Leadworth were like her family, they all knew her business for example....so the family unit is pretty much there, just a different take on it, and therefore not like the classic series in that sense where the family are hardly ever mentioned...or shown for long.

She's found a job which involves going to parties, being highly appreciated and getting paid good money for doing something not remotely arduous. That seems pretty smart to me.
