Sad and amazing to think that its nearly 24 years (in May) since he passed on.

For me he is my favourite Doctor. Sure I had seen some Hartnell and much Troughton but I had never really payed much attention to the show until Pertwee came along, in colour.

He was Dr Who - an action man, a charmer, an intellect, a scientist. I have never, nor since, got the impressin that any of the other Dr Whos were scientists...

How do you remember Jon Pertwee?

Is it really that long?!!! I'm only 24!!! I idolised Jon Pertwee as a child... I loved watching Re-runs of Doctor Who and he was without a doubt my favourite! But for me... He'll always be Worzel Gummidge and I hope he's up there some where now enjoying a nice cup of tea and a slice o' cake!!!!

At Longleat for the 20th Anniversary convention (in spite of the appalling Glastonbury weather) he walked around surrounded by fans, towering above most with a constant smile on his face and refusing to be coerced into appointments until he had finished talking to someone on his travels. When the tannoy announcement came over: "Would Miss Elisabeth Sladen please make her way to the meeting point" he looked up, smiled and said: "Right: that should do it" as 99% of the hordes surrounding him rushed away in search of SJ. A wonderful man.

It's 14 years not 24, same year as the TV Movie.

If I could be any Doctor, I'd go for 3 every time

3 reasons to love Doctor number 3:

Jon Pertwee sings The Doctor

Doctor Who - The Time Monster - The Daisiest Daisy

There was a Doctor with dress sense if ever there was one... until he became a scarecrow that is.

Here's how to remember it. In the 70s, Hartnell died, in the 80s, Troughton died, in the 90s, Pertwee died, and in the 00s, no Doctor died - Tom Baker broke the trend!

Also, Wurzel didn't finish until 1989.

A school play I was in had a song called "Positive Action Man". For me that pretty much sums up Jon's Doctor.

I've loved all the Doctors but Jon will always be my Doctor - who better to have as your childhood hero

I loved Jon Pertwee, and I loved his doctor (although I love all doctors). He was such a lovely gentleman and he was always happy to reprise his role as Dr Who. I also loved his relationship with Jo, and I thought that the end of Green Death was a very sad, but also beautiful moment.

I hope the Doc and Jo's upcoming reunion is done just as beautifully

As for the great Mr Pertwee, I remember Peter Sissons relating the news of his death on the News My dad taped it I think, back in the days where anything slightly Who-related was taped

It could be great couldn't it. However, this doctor is less emotional than the tenth doctor (nothing wrong with either of them), so it could be that he brushes it off a bit.

I'm really looking forward to it though. Have we got any idea when the episode with Jo will be shone.

I do remember the news as well, and I was really, really sad.

Totally agree. Lovely man. I also met him at Longleat (and have a wonderful keepsake pic of Jon and I and a Cyberman together) and his obvious love of the fans and the role was truly touching.

Most people fail to believe that he was the Doctor for an incredible 5 years. Had Roger not died he would of stayed longer.

He had some memorable stories like Death to the Daleks, Three Doctors .

I remember JP's death ... reading Poppy's statement that it was 24yrs ago really shocked me! I was at uni at the time, so it must be 14yrs not 24yrs ago!

JP was one of DW's elder statesmen. Although I am not keen on a large number of his stories, he redefined the character of the Doctor, and the series changed so utterly during his time.

I am not sure that the "daisiest daisy" speech is anything to boast about: Mrs Chuff and I were stunned by its tweeness while watching The Time Monster, recently. At their best, the Pertwee years have a real joie de vivre. At their worst, they are just "some people standing around and talking". JP was incapable of a lazy performance though.

He's my Doctor as well and his theme is my absolute favourite theme tune and is infinitely superior to the ricky-ticky, keep the kids bopping, stuff and nonsense rubbish they are using for the theme now. It used to put the fear of God into me and sent a shiver up my spine! Now it's an irritation.

I saw him at Longleat, too! He had an incredible presence, he was one of those people who just seemed to fill the room with his sheer personality. Not my favourite Doctor, but an incredibly nice man and a giant of the industry.

My first Doctor, so underrated, brilliant without being cocky and fun at times too. So clearly of high intelligence and commanded great authority. My faves are Pertwee, T. Baker and David Tennant and I don't have an order of preference.

The perfect Doctor in my eyes.

My recollection of Mr. Pertwee is of a thorough gentleman.

Many years ago when the BBC ramped up the VHS sales of Doctor Who I went to a signing for The Pertwee Years video. Jon was surrounded by fans old and new, I was in my early twenties I think. He asked me if I remembered him as the Doctor and I told him The Time Warrior was my earliest TV memory.
The throng were baying for autographs so I got my copy signed and went off to do other things. About 3 hours later I saw Jon and his minder coming out of Our Price Records, clearly the novelty had faded and he was heading home - no more fans to please. He spotted me and asked me if I knew where to get a coffee. I gave him directions and ... he invited me along. We sat and chatted for about 40 minutes, me and my hero.
You know that saying "never meet your heroes" - well in the case of the great Jon Pertwee it couldn't be any more false. He was so friendly, knowledgeable and polite. We chatted about my Who memories and I told him a particular story about being frightened of Aggedor and the Ice Warriors as a child. I told him how I'd been having nightmares and waking in the night and that my parents had banned the then 4 year old me from watching the show.
I told him how the nightmares continued, that I would wake in the night terrified, but that I stopped calling for my mum, instead choosing to sit in bed, petrified, until morning. Why? Because I HAD to see the Doctor.
Jon was so sweet about this, laughing and joking about it. He asked me if he could use the story one day in a book and I told him yes. We exchanged details and I went away, happy to have had the chance to meet one of my all time heroes.
Then about 3 years later Jon was doing his one man show, I noticed that he was playing close to my home and was intending getting tickets. One morning a letter dropped in my doormat. A personal note from Jon and 4 tickets for the show. We went, and he told the story, which got a big "aaaah" and a laugh. Then he got me to stand up in front f everyone! I was mortified and delighted at the same time.
We had a drink and chat after the show.
The next news I heard of Jon was of his passing, and I confess I shed a tear or two.
Jon Pertwee was brilliant as the Doctor, but in real life he was so much more.
Those are my memories of the late Jon Pertwee.

What a wonderful story MKPatrick, you must have been gobsmacked to receive the tickets out the blue.

Last year I listened to one of his one man shows which was on BBC7, very entertaining and, in parts, very moving.

Pertwee was the first Doctor I remember, as a child.
I remember his Doctor as being very stylish, very very clever and astute - scientific, as someone has pointed out - quite 'grandfatherly' (for me as a young child at the time), even a little intimidating. I have much clearer memories of Tom Baker, and remember the transformation from one into the other so vividly! It was like nothing I'd ever seen on TV before (ok, I was only 5 )

Pertwee was always much more Worzel Gummidge for me, but that's just because of my age. He was however a superbly versatile actor. I love his little cameo in Carry On Screaming too!
