That is quite scary to think it is nearly 24 years.

Oh yes, I remember him very well. As well as being The Doctor, I hear him in the Navy Lark on BBC 7.

And of course Katy Manning, who was his companion, will be with Sarah Jane later this year.

One of my favourite stories to this day has to be spearhead from space. That was a really good one how his memory was erased by the timelords sent to earth and he gave such a brilliant performance.

Also, Wurzel didn't finish until 1989.”

MKPatrick: that's a really lovely story. Thanks for it!

Mr Pertwee was magnificent in the Carry Ons. The Soothsayer in C.O.Cleo is brilliant!

I was in Jon's presence once, as an extra in one of 'The Stranger' videos in the early '90s. That guy really knew how to make an entrance, in all his finery too and he loved every minute of it.

I always liked Jon Pertwee as the doctor, and even today I still believe that the 7 parter Inferno is one of the all time great doctor who storys.

It has never been surpassed. Mind you, I was in love with Liz Shaw (Caroline John) at the time.

Well I was a Troughton fan in those days, so when Jon appeared out of that police box in1970 Iwas gobsmacked!
(I was about nine or ten then).
I didn't like the fact that he couldn't use the Tardis anymore and the fact that he was always on Earth! The second series improved a bit, with Jo Grant in tow, and it had a bit more Tardis activity (not much). But the Master (brilliant idea that it was) was a little overpowering......basically he was the villain in EVERY episode/Story for that series.
Series 3 got better in my opinion - The tenth anniversary, and the Doctor got the Tardis back properly! We got to see other worlds again. He went on to work with UNIT as well, and then gained the legendary Sarah jane.
Personally, I enjoyed his last three years and he was seemingly enjoying it too.
I was a bit sad when I saw him regenerate into a long-nosed Bohemian! (well, not for long!)

Jon Pertwee was my favourite Doctor, but has been squeezed out by David Tennant

Cant see Tennant still being so warm to fans or still wanting to talk about Dr Who in 30 years time!

Agree with John, and what a party "snidey and pooping comment" poppycod (this are your own words when people disrupt the party of SM's Who, i.e. Amy).

I love Jon Pertwee, but one thing that is definitely fantastic about David Tennant is that he is a true fan. Did you watch him in the CIN Masterchef, he seemed to know more about classic Who than New Who. He absolutely adores Dr Who!!

Will he still loveit in 30 years time or will he blame it for typecasting him and stoppng him achieving is career aims.

He left Dr Who to improve, yes IMPROVE his career. He may be a fan but he saw it as a stepping stone to somethig better.

Jon Pertwee saw Dr Who as the pinnacle of his - a true gent.

How do you know what David Tennant is going to do in 30 years time (maybe you have a time machine). Jon Pertwee is a gent, and lovely and fantastic, and he obviously loved being the doctor, which we know because at the end of his life he still cherished the thought. At present, David Tennant we know that David loves Dr Who, loved playing Dr Who, knows more facts about Dr Who than some of us, and based on this I assume he will love it in 30 years time. He has never blamed Casanova for being typecast. I'm sorry you have no basis for your assumptions. We'll discuss this topic in 30 years time.

Shame that you couldn't celebrate Jon Pertwee without taking a dig at DT.

What arrant nonsense - Jon Pertwee had a long and distinguished career as an actor playing a multitude of different roles on Film, on TV and Radio as well as on the Variety and Dramatic stage - he compered gameshows (Whodunnit anyone?") and went on to prove that typecasting need not be an issue for a DW actor by reiventing himself as Worzel Gummidge, a role for which he is remembered for by one generation of children far better than he was for DW. A true gentleman, no doubt, but he would not appreciate you denegrating a fellow actor and DW actor at that in his name for just that very reason - you should be ashemed of yourself.

It was no 'dig' at Tennant it was a comment to show how great Pertwee was towards fandom 20 years after he played to Doctor.

Of course not, I must have misunderstood you (and of course it's not possible to make such a comment without referring to one of the New Who doctors).

I loved Tom Baker, but actually now it is the Jon Pertwee stories that bring on chills - the green death, the spiders, the autons, screaming Jo (didn't like too much) but Sarah Jane was a big sister figure. The brigadier, Bessie, the master..

Pertwee's doctor was very "actory" - a glamorous figure looking after us humans. His doctor was professional, energetic, autocratic but very kind underneath, is my lasting impression.

What a wonderful story MKPatrick, you were very lucky. I was 3 when Jon Pertwee was turning into Tom Baker. My Brother had been terrifying me by telling me bedtime stories about this man in a blue box with giant spiders and monsters. I didn't believe him until one day I was allowed to stay up late (5.30pm) and my earliest television memory is of Tom Baker in Ark in Space. I had nightmares for weeks seeing those cryogenically frozen bodies. Tom's big eyes scarred me. In 1988 I emigrated to Australia and they were still showing Jon Pertwee eps. I quickly became a huge fan as those earth bound eps made it more realistic. As much as I grew up on Tom Baker eps nearly all the monsters in Tom Baker years looked like glove puppets or men in bear suits. How spooky were the autons and that scene in Madame Tussauds. I loved how Jon was an action man who jumped into a hovercraft and a helicopter.

Many years ago when the BBC ramped up the VHS sales of Doctor Who I went to a signing for The Pertwee Years video. Jon was surrounded by fans old and new, I was in my early twenties I think. He asked me if I remembered him as the Doctor and I told him The Time Warrior was my earliest TV memory.
The throng were baying for autographs so I got my copy signed and went off to do other things. About 3 hours later I saw Jon and his minder coming out of Our Price Records, clearly the novelty had faded and he was heading home - no more fans to please. He spotted me and asked me if I knew where to get a coffee. I gave him directions and ... he invited me along. We sat and chatted for about 40 minutes, me and my hero.
You know that saying "never meet your heroes" - well in the case of the great Jon Pertwee it couldn't be any more false. He was so friendly, knowledgeable and polite. We chatted about my Who memories and I told him a particular story about being frightened of Aggedor and the Ice Warriors as a child. I told him how I'd been having nightmares and waking in the night and that my parents had banned the then 4 year old me from watching the show.
I told him how the nightmares continued, that I would wake in the night terrified, but that I stopped calling for my mum, instead choosing to sit in bed, petrified, until morning. Why? Because I HAD to see the Doctor.
Jon was so sweet about this, laughing and joking about it. He asked me if he could use the story one day in a book and I told him yes. We exchanged details and I went away, happy to have had the chance to meet one of my all time heroes.
Then about 3 years later Jon was doing his one man show, I noticed that he was playing close to my home and was intending getting tickets. One morning a letter dropped in my doormat. A personal note from Jon and 4 tickets for the show. We went, and he told the story, which got a big "aaaah" and a laugh. Then he got me to stand up in front f everyone! I was mortified and delighted at the same time.
We had a drink and chat after the show.
The next news I heard of Jon was of his passing, and I confess I shed a tear or two.
Jon Pertwee was brilliant as the Doctor, but in real life he was so much more.
Those are my memories of the late Jon Pertwee.”

A wonderful story about a wonderful man.

This will be my last reply in here, apologies to those who wanted to celebrate JP:

Jon Pertwee was absolutely wonderful, I loved his doctor, I had a little crush on him and I think he was a wonderful human being (apart from the doctor). I have quite a few of his stories, and I loved his relationship with Liz, Jo and Sarah. I think one of the most poignant moments for me was when he went off alone in the Green Death. I wish he was still around to do a 11 doctor story.

I'll come back (never say you are going off), but only to keep the thread on topic:

Cypher this is an excellent translations (in a funny way), I don't know what Hauptmann translates to (my name comes from a poster I was given when I was younger, which consists of a smiling green frog with the title - lach doch mal - looks like that=> ). Some people thought my username is Scottish.

Anyway, I don't remember Jon Pertwee saying something in German, but I would have assumed no - considering the relativ recent history and the fact that the Dalek's were very much modelled on the Nazis. I wonder what he would have thought of the German Dalek's though.

I know the last Jon Pertwee series is on Seesaw.com, I might have to watch it again (although it will make me very sad).
