I currently have a Topfield 5800, which has served me reasonably well for a number of years. But it's starting to get unreliable:

Picture freezing needing a restart to fix
Occasionally missing recordings
Frequent "Verifying files..." messages on startup
I'm thinking it's just getting old and it's probably time for a new box.

I'm not dissatisfied with the Topfield, but I've got no huge preference for getting the same thing again. Looking around, it seems that the 5800 is still pretty much current - there's now the 5810 but I don't see a huge amount of change over the 5800.

Is there a significant benefit in the 5810 over the 5800? I'm somewhat surprised that there's been so little change in the Topfield range over the years, I'd expect more change in features, etc, in the time I've had the 5800. Other manufacturers have been coming out with newer and better models at a far higher rate - should I assume they've overtaken Topfield?

The only real selling points for the Topfield are the dual tuners and the ability to copy recordings to my PC (but the latter's mainly for backups, and it's so painfully slow I don't use it as much as I'd like - maybe a DVD recorder would be a better option in any case...)

Have I missed anything I should know about the Topfields? (I'll probably post a question in one of the other forums asking if there are any other manufacturers' boxes that would fit my requirements, as well).

Thanks,
Paul.

Or more likely and more cheaply just a new set of capacitors for its power supply. Have a look over on the toppy user site for details. The 5810 has its own issues over the older more favoured 5800 but they may be such that you can live with them.

If you fancy sticking with the 5800, I have seen quite a few in Various Currys (at least in North West London) been sold off as end of line items. I have seen a few for £179 (5800s) ( One In Harrow yesterday) and found a 5800t for £139 in Ruislip which I picked up last week.

From what I have read the 5810 has issues in comparison to the 5800 (particularly with taps)., check out Amazon reviews I think is a good start. Myself I was not that impressed with the 5800t ( in comparison to my Humax 9300) and was on the verge of returning it, but after putting on mystuff and Powermanager and finding the USB transfer in Turbo mode to be very good I have grown to like it a lot, and now have the Humax as a spare box.

I have just ordered a 5810. £189.99. Not a bad price and a lot less than I paid for my 160gb 5800 4 years ago, £240. Just hope that I don't get a faulty one.

After much deliberation I am going to go for a 5810 (Play £199 500gb) and then use the TAP's to go for as close as I can to my old 5800.

Can I ask of the power supply for the 5810 is more robust than the 5800 or does it also need new capacitors after a while. As I get an extra years warranty then I can effectively have 3 years of trouble free viwing and who knows what while be the order of the day by then.

Delivered, setup, added quiet fan, HDMI upscaling looks great on better channels, use with My Stuff is much better than 5800 (maybe thats coz I was using older version previously)

Overall very happy
