Sony Minidisc MZ-N1

I bought a 'customer return' Sony Minidisc MZ-N1 on Ebay recently, claiming to be in full working order. Now that I've got it, that doesn't appear to be the case, but I can return it within a month if I want, but obviously I'd rather find a quick, easy and cheap solution.

I've never owned a minidisc player before so don't know much about diagnosis. All I've tried with it so far is to record music from a cd to the player, via my pc usb port. Everything seems to go smoothly but when it comes to playback it is virtually non-existent, with 95% of it inaudible stuttering, as if it's got very bad hiccups and the music can only rarely play for moe than a second.

Any ideas if this is just a need for a lens/laser cleaner, or is it more terminal?

I think the first thing we need to know is, does it play any other MDs you may have OK? Have you tried this?

It could be a playback issue of course but........

Did you check the recording quality on your PC before downloading to your MD?

Are there any settings you can play with. Transfer bit rate for example?
