I'd say that Sarah-Jane Smith and Peri were treated the worst by the Doctor, in the sense that both were just abandoned.

We saw in 'School Reunion' how upset Sarah-Jane had been over the whole thing; heaven knows what Peri must be feeling given that she didn't even make it back to her own planet!

Cypher

Well, he did exactly the same thing to Jack Harkness...

Well Sarah Jane was the first wife as Mickey called her and the Doctor did feel guilty I suppose given future events. Jo Grant was nearly the first wife but she dumped the Doc.

For my money, Martha was treated like crap!

Of course Adric died, and I think if it was'nt for how the character was written or the 'actor'(!!!!!!) playing him, there may have been a lot more sympathy and outrage.

She was indeed, and worse still, the Doctor knew it; still too hung up about Rose, I guess, but that didn't make it better.

Also Jack: It wasn't his fault that Rose resurrected him, so the Doc was pretty unfair in this regard too, but then again, Jack has been a big boy, so I am not feeling too sorry for him ...

Bottom-line: if you travel with the Doctor you better look out for yourself

There's also that little matter of always disabling his vortex manipulator. Doctor, you'd find people more agreeable to that if you didn't have a habit of stranding them centuries away from their own time.

But Jack waited over 100 years for the Doctor, changed Torchwood in the Doctor's honour and the Doctor has a go at him for it. The Doctor seems to be brushing him off most of the time.

Martha was treated badly in series 3, Human Nature obviously, but towards the end the Doctor had more respect for her than other companions, he got her a job with UNIT etc. So I think overall she was treated okay.

The Doctor's appalling track record begins on Boxing Day 1964 when he locked his own grand daughter out of the TARDIS and left her behind in 22nd century London, to live out the rest of her days as part of a devastated society in a destroyed city. Nice!

Jamie and Zoe had their memories wiped and were forced to return to their own eras with no memory of their time with the Doctor . . as did Donna forty years later!

Sarah Jane was pretty much dumped back on Earth out of the blue. She was given her marching orders and booted out the door in two minutes flat - and that was after years of travel on board the TARDIS.

Peri was simply abandoned. She was left behind on an alien planet with no option but to marry King Yrcanos (it worries me that I knew how to spell that!). The Doctor had the chance to return and save her but it appears he chose not to.

Captain Jack was abandoned in the far future surrounded by Dalek dust.

And Rose was left trapped on a parallel Earth. I mean, OK, the first time it wasn't the Doctor's fault. But the second time it was on purpose. Although she did get a Doctor of her own to play with (and a 10th Doctor at that!).

Tegan left the Doctor in less than perfect circumstances, but at least that was 100% her choice (although he did whizz off in the TARDIS seconds later, which hardly gave her the chance to change her mind).

So - who do you think got the worst treatment? One of the above, or do you have your own to suggest?”

You see I said that the Doctor is a cruel alien!!!! Right from the early days!!!!

And this is why his leaving Rose in the parallel world with his clone has always made sense to me....because he does that....he thinks what is best...and therefore he does it...even with Donna, she would have prefferd death, but he didn't want her to die...so erased her memories. He made the decisions for the likes of Susan and SJS too.... With Jamie and Zoe though....that wasn't his fault...it was the Time Lords...they erased thier memory because they wanted to, not the Doctor. ~But over all the Doctor can be a right old idiot (went for a slight family friendly word there)

I think even though he had intitailly treated Martha very badly, she came out the strongest...because even though she had intially followed him like a sick puppy, she learnt from that, and becaome a stronger and more independant person for it....so much so...its her who is doing the dumping now....Poor Tom!

Doctor you created a monster!!!!!

First of all, I don't care if their names were mentioned in the opening credits or what the official BBC website says, IMO Adelaide, Astrid and Lady Wotserface Da Souza do not qualify as companions!

Second of all, IMO the worst treated companion was Dodo.

And I don't care what some fans say IMO and the BBC's they do qualify as companions - see we'll all just keep going round in circles. You count who you want to count and the rest of us will count who we want to count. Nobody will ever win when it comes to opinions.

Fair enough. Each to his or her opinion.

I should have to say Jack, I don't think it comes much worse than abandoning someone on an abandoned space station intentionally after they have put their life on the line for you without even taking the time to let them know they are now immortal....

Sarah was not 'the first wife', she was about the sixteenth companion. Mickey didn't know what he was talking about.

Why isn't Dodo a poll option?

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Ace yet!! She walked off into the sunset with the Doctor at the end of Survival, and by the time of the TV Movie had gone!

I'd like a canon version of what happened to her. I don't believe she's dead.

As much as I strongly dislike Jack (killing one's own grandson doesn't fly well with me), I would have to say he is probably one of the worst treated companions. What with him being abbandoned with no explanation in the year 200,100 and having to wait a 100 years before he got any kind of explanation. And for 10 to try and avoid you when you finaly meet him again. I don't think the Doctor asking him to rejoin again full time at the end of The Last of the Timelord's was enough of reprisal either.

What happened to her was shown in the novels, which are canon as far as I'm concerned. Ace had more exposure in one medium or another than any previous companion.

Actually, if you believe the novels to be canon, then Mel wasn't treated very well either.

In the TV story Dragonfire, she voluntarily decides to discontinue travelling with the Doctor to go off instead with Sabalom Glitz (which seems like a very odd thing to do).

However, in one of the novels (forget the title - I read it years ago) we discover that the Seventh Doctor had "psychically persuaded" her to "volunteer" to leave him so that he could pursue the story arc concerning Ace and Fenric etc.

While I agree that there may be many different interpretations on who is or is not a companion, I do feel that there should be some consistent application of the chosen interpretation. If someone is to be rated a companion just because the producers at the time say they are, whereas other characters were not so rated because the producers at that time in the show's history felt differently, that does seem a bit silly to me. If Astrid, for example, is a companion, then why can't Richard Mace from The Visitation be one?

Personally, I'd say a companion is someone who accompanied the Doctor on at least two consecutive adventures. By that definition, Adam is a companion and I think he got a pretty raw deal, unceremoniously booted out the Tardis with an odd "thing" on his forehead. Though he was a bit of a shifty character, to be fair, so perhaps he deserved it.

Ah well, what is canon is another vexed question!

Adric. The Fourth should have put him out of his (and our) misery.

Well, Katarina, Sara Kingdom, Adric and (if you believe the novels are canon) Dodo actually did.
