Kippers
Years since I tried them and want to have another go.
BUT what do you have with them? I seem to remember eating them on their own and then regretting it having kipper burps for the rest of the day

There was a recent tv cookery programme featuring kippers - I wish I'd recorded it, if anyone else watched I'd appreciate the link.

Just make sure they are not past their sell by date or you may end up with a corpse.

I don't tend to eat them for a main meal, just for a snack so for me I just have them with some nice buttered brown bread.

I have a kipper fillet on it's own with as little interference as possible. A fresh kipper fillet is taste sensation!

Heat them through in a shallow pan (frying pan is best) with simmering water and a knob of butter. Serve topped with a softly-poached egg and some crusty brown bread and butter.
Or make a kipper paté. I use the same method as with smoked mackerel paté - skin and flake the fish, add to about one and a half times as much by volume of cream cheese or crème fraîche, add a good dollop of horseradish sauce, a squeeze of lemon juice and lots of black pepper. Blend to a smooth-ish consistency and serve on hot toast or crusty brown bread, or with a salad dressed with a lemony-mustardy dressing. |

My dad sometimes has kippers for breakfast. just lightly fried with buttered bread
Apparently if you eat something sweet afterwards, like a slice of bread and jam, it stops the kipper burps |

just on their own with brown bread and butter, kippers were always a fave for my Dad, but we had to leave the back door open for the rest of the day if he had them for breakfast
