I suppose he was 'my' Master too, but even at 10/11, I realised his portrayal was too over-the-top. Not that I ever for a minute thought it was his 'fault', or that he was a bad actor, he plainly wasn't.

Neither do I. As I have stated previously, it was down to JNT, who over the course of his ten years made a lot of mistakes as producer. You can't blame an actor who is forced to play against type. I think how Ainley was in Survival was probably the closest to how he envisaged playing The Master. Shame the change came to late for him and it's kind of disappointing in that respect.

I loved Ainley's Master when I was growing up and always looked forward to his appearances, so have a huge soft spot for him - had a big grin on my face when they used his laughter in Utopia. Have to agree with the people who say he worked best with Davison, I always thought of him as Davison's Master, as Delgado was Pertwee's.

Oh, he was in a good few things over the years. I remember him being in The Land That Time Forgot, a rather over-complicated "lost world" fantasy from the 70s where the crews of a British ship and a German U-boat are stranded together in a land of dinosaurs. Anthony was one of the German crew.

Let's not forgot the number of things that John Nathan-Turner got RIGHT, and also not forget that it was his commitment to the show that kept it on telly. He forfeited a much more diverse career, staying with DW forever, because there was nobody else to make the show! If he had quit and gone elsewhere, DW would have ended.

I did start a thread about JNT and if you look, I did make some positive comments about JNT(Though admittedly they were outnumbered by negative ones!) Some of the points you made I put there.
One of the things I did credit him for was during the hiatus in '86 when he was working behind the scenes to save the show. I also said he did care for the show and yes, some things were out of his control.
Unfortunately, I stand by what I said about Anthony Ainley and Colin Baker. The latter in particular.
