Its good but why were Nat West bank allowed to use it.
As I was too young to watch Miami Vice when it first came out. When I hear this track now all I can think of is some dodgy 80s Adverts. |

If you're talking pop/rock/electronic instrumentals, there are far better in my opinion.....
Chase - Giorgio Moroder Magic Fly - Space Fanfare For The Common Man - ELP Dance Of The Devil - Cozy Powell Intermezzo #1 - ABBA Just to name a few! |

It is a fantastic piece.
I think Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygene Pt 2 (Single Version) wins it for me though! http://www.youtube.com/watch#!v=x8dqzTl0vUI |

I agree with the OP it was, is and will be the best instrumental ever. I loved the way Jan Hammer encapsulated Miami Vice with his synth scoring. They would strip away the dialogue and just have his score tell the story. A truly talented musician!

I remember that one coming out as a single in 1987, but didn't JC do an earlier, different theme tune to it which was much, well, 'rockier'? That was a single in 85... and one which I prefer TBH.
As for all-time best instrumental, no not really; there's stuff by the synth groups that I much prefer for starters from the likes of Human League, Depeche Mode, even Eurythmics and Client; as well as another heads up here for Giorgio Moroder's The Chase. On certain days though, it's probably Oxygene Part whichever was the one that was used as the theme tune to Dr Miriam Stoppard's Where There's Life. |

You'd really need to define "instrumental" to even have a stab at answering this.
Presumably the OP means instrumental in the rock and pop field and therefore excluding the vast majority of Jazz. Ironically Jan Hammer is also well known as a jazz musician |

It's good, but no where near the best piece of instrumental music ever made.

I am assuming the OP was limiting instrumental music to single themed, small/concise works, acoustic and/or electric/electronic.
My opinion is that while the theme is great, the execution/instrumentation is a bit lazy and lacklustre; there could have been a bit more complexity, though I do like the relentless/running baseline which ties the whole track together. Vangelis' Chariots of Fire is superior, as are any of (Vangelis') main themes for Blade Runner. Jean Michel Jarre's Chronologie, Magnetic Fields and Oxygene works are great aswell.
