An annoying feature of the Phillips box is that it only seems to 'add' channels when you do a scan. To clear down and do a full scan you have to do a factory reset which then means you lose all the recording schedules such as series record etc.

Why they didn't give two options - add channels or full rescan I'll never know.

Occasionally when I switch my Philips box on there is a message displayed saying TV channels, or sometimes, radio channels have been added. I don't need to scan for them. My gripe is it doesn't tell me the names of these added channels and I don't know what's been added as I don't know the full list that's already there.

On Wednesday night I set Law & Order SVU & Law & Order Cl to record on Ch 5 at 9.00 & 10.0PM. Yesterday I saw the box had recorded both programmes plus the repeats on Ch5 + 1.

That's another complaint going to CH5. Let's see if they comment this time.

This problem could make you end up with missed recordings if times clash.

I note if I record something on Chn4HD it records also from chn4+1 from one hour into the program.

What, the box or the dog?

Just joking, I know what you mean.

How can it be fine for weeks then utter shite for days. I've gone back to not using the epg when it's recording cos it just locks up and if I record 2 things at once it's a crap shoot as to what is going to happen.

I know what you mean about recording 2 over-lapping programmes. I have made the mistake in the past of say leaving the box on ITV1 and then recording something off More 4 and BBC2. With only 2 tuners you think it would switch to the 2 channels to record but instead one records ok but the second will fail. What I tend to do now is when 2 simultaneous or over-lapping recordings are due I flick the box between the 2 channels and leave it on one and the recording go ahead ok. Meanwhile I'll be watching something else via the inbuilt DTT on the TV set.

A bit of a pain but I guess this must be a problem with other PVRs too.

Anyone had the problem with picture cutting out completely? And then coming back on saying press green for 520p resolution or some crap like that? Kinda annoying..

I get that a lot. HDCP aithentication error. I thought it was because I'm using a HDMI switch that's not passing it properly...obviously not. Mine is being a right pain now...having to do a factory reset several times a day do get it working. Keeps saying signal lost. It was fine until Thursday last week. As I don't need HD anymore I may go for a boggo box with HDMI out.

I am still at a loss to know what Ch5 are up to. I am still getting duplicate, and now triplicate recordings of the same programme. I set Monday night's The Walking Dead to record on Ch5. I ended up with with that recording plus another on Ch5+1 then last night it recorded the same programme repeated on 5*. I'm getting a bit peed off with this.

Strangely some of their programmes, CSI NY for example only record once. I wish they'd get their act together.

I have complained to Ch5 and they haven't even bother to acknowledge my complaint. I will keep at them.

Asda can have this pile of shite back, what kind of nobs design a box that shits it's pants and crashes everytime it has to record 2 things at once. It's the last thing I buy from Philips if they are happy this heap is fit for purpose.

I can happily report the TVonics box is lightyears ahead of the Philips. No lock ups when using the EPG and recording, no stuttering, no random flashing lights, you can record 2 things at once and iPlayer is present and correct.

Had a HDT8520 for a year now with no real problems apart from the occassional freezing cured by switching off and on. Now got one recording which when highlighted for playing causes the box to totally freeze. Have tried factory reset etc. - no help. I have to switch off/on then scroll up to get at other recordings. if I accidently scroll too far and highlight it again everything freezes again. Any ideas?

Hi All

First post, so please be gentle.......

Does anyone have a definitive answer to the issue of the box recording repeats? Is it a software issue that may or may not be resolved if and when an update is released. Or is it a problem with the broadcasters not doing something causing the box to record multiple repeats?

One other issue I'd like to query is about deleting some of the unwanted channels from the list. I stumbled across a thread somewhere in which someone said they could but no detailed information was offered on how to do it..... Can it be done?

Thanks Tom

With regard to recording repeats, is this happening on the Chanell 5 channels? C5 5* and 5USA? It seems C5 have a reputation for messing up series link recordings.

I have yet to find a way of deleting individual channels on the Phillips box. Which is a pain when you want to get rid of the wobbly boobs channels or channels that aren't there anymore.

Agreed. All the duplicate recordings I get are Ch5, Ch5+1, 5* & 5USA

Ch5 "customer services" refuse to answer any email asking why this problem continues. The only way round it is to record the one programme only and not select "series repeat". You just have to remember to set the PVR eachtime for Ch5 programmes. Which can be a pain and defeats the object of series record.

Hi

Yes it does seem to be C5 and related channels. It did record something on both BBC1 and BBC1-HD too even though it was set for the SD channel........
Decided send it back anyway. The picture randomly locks/jerks while watching live tv.
So it's back to our trusty ( ? ) old Humax 9200 even though it's been dropping things off the recording schedule. Does anyone know if they're working on updating the firmware to 1.00.26? Our daughter has a 9150 and the update for that has made it much more reliable.

Cheers Tom

Pretty much in the same boat - had it over a year with no real issues other than the annoying recording things on +1 or HD/SD and the repeats. (Also happens with C4/E4 for me too)

This exact issue happened to me last week but was solved by formatting the hard drive (luckily I had nothing I needed to keep from recordings). However this morning it seems to be completely frozen - the white light at the top is on as is the HD logo and record button, but I can't turn it on or off and even unplugging it doesn't seem to reboot it.

It's easy enough to say go and get another one but for our other TV we've bought two or three other models in the last year and they all ended up going back within the week. There doesn't seem to be a decent box on the market at the moment, and certainly not a reasonable price.

Well not having any luck in rebooting this at all - it won't switch off and pressing the standby key and holding it does nothing. Found the receipt though and looks like I've 15 days to return it - bought 3 Freeview HD PVRs in the last year, returned them all.

Any recommendations for a replacement - I'm willing to pay a bit more for one that actually works but wary that the last couple I tried kept dropping channels even though our TVs and this PVR before it died had no issues.

I'm weighing up between a Sony SVRHDT500B and Humax HDR-FOX T2 500GB, both of which look to include the iPlayer (now if only we had the broadband speed to support it!) - but even as someone who considers themselves quite technically minded there is kind of information overload when making such decisions now - and frankly I've completely lost faith that there is any product on the market which actually does what it's supposed too.
