In this case the recording is successful, and can be played the same day, but the day after, it disappears from the library listing, very strange.

I've deleted some files, so I will see what happens after Fridays recording.

I've also set my old Thompson standard def PVR to record it to see what happens with that.
Well, clearing out the files seems to have worked, last Fridays recording of Great Night Out is still there after nearly a week, we'll see how tomorrows recording goes on.

Secondly, after getting many duplicate series recordings, mainly from Channel 5 programmes being recorded on Ch5+1 and any repeats on 5USA, I have had to resort to selecting just one individual programme at a time to record on Ch5. Despite this I still occasionally get a duplicate recording on Ch5+1. This only happens on Ch5.

I have taken this up with Ch5, who say it's not their problem, I think it is. I have spoken to an adviser at Digital TV UK who says it's Ch5's problem, in fact the adviser I spoke to said he gets the same problem. I have also taken it up with OFCOM. They told me that even though it's not in their remit they did speak to Ch5. They admitted to OFCOM the problem may be caused by:-

This is part of the Ch5 reply to OFCOM

They added that while they haven't conclusively identified the cause of the problem, it seems that they may relate to the fact that channel 5 is carried on a different Freeview "Multiplex" to Ch5+1 & 5USA and some models of PVR may not be correctly ignoring repeat broadcasts on the second Multiplex.

I have put this to Philips for their comments, I am still awaiting a reply..

I have received the following advice from Philips re the duplicate recordings on Channel 5, 5+1 & 5USA..

Regarding your issue it looks to me that you have an interferance between two transmitters. Please restore the factory settings MENU>SETTINGS>SET UP> FACTORY RESET> RESET SETTINGS

However, when you get to the POWERING ANTENNA screen select the ON option. This will let the unit focus on one network rather than two so this should rectify the problem. It could also be the case that you might need a device to calibrate a frequency protocol but please let me know if this helps.

I don't wish to tempt fate but I did this and since doing it I have not had one Ch 5 programme duplicate record when set on series record. Beware, a Factory Reset will erase all your recordings and preference settings.

Why it's taken Philips so long to come up with a solution I don't know. I took it up with them ages ago.

Has anyone got a Wi-fi dongle/USB stick working for this box? What is suitable?

I have one of these & on the whole it is working ok.
However, I have one issue. This concerns the front panel lcd display. When I first switch the unit on the panel display lights up, but the longer the unit is on the panel display gets dimmer & dimmer then eventually goes off altogether. Sometimes it comes back on for a few seconds then goes off again. After you switch the unit off & leave it for a while, then switch it on again, it goes through the same process again. I have also noticed that if the unit is doing a timer recording & you turn it on manually, the panel does not light up at all.
Whether it is heat related I don't know. I have also changed the panel brightness settings to no avail.
Any further thoughts on this please?

The Philips HDT-8520 has no network services, so there isn't support for such a device.

I bought one of these boxes second-hand a few days ago.

The only thing (so far) that bothers me is that the sound output is too low, both on scart and HDMI. I normally have my TV volume level set around 20. To get the save level from the Philips, I have to set the TV volume to around 60 ish. I have increased the Philips own audio level to maximum.

Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just my unit.

This does seem to be a feature of this box. If I have my TV set to HDMI I have to turn the volume almost fully up and remember to turn it back down before switching back to the non-HD inbuilt DDT tuner!!!

Drives me mad.

Yep. It makes me wonder sometimes how things such as this never get noticed before units go into production!

There is sometimes a slight difference in audio levels between different boxes, but this one is way lower than any others.
