Someone has mentioned Gary Rhodes in another thread and this has caused me to wonder; is he ever on TV these days?

Yes, he does alot of work for Good Food (UKTV Food).

He has done travel/cooking programs "Rhodes across..." India, China, the Carribean and Italy. He also has hosted the Local Hero program/competition.

He's also popped up on Market Kitchen a couple of times.

He's been doing a series on UKTV Food. Rhodes across Italy, China, India and the latest one, the Caribbean.

I thought Italy was the latest. IIRC the order was as in my first post.

I was thinking more of the main terrestrial channels.

Well I watched India, China and Italy and only recently the Caribbean, perhaps a repeat.

I think his stint on Masterchef killed his terrestrial career

Time flies, his time on MC was in 2001.

Having a quick search he did Hell's Kitchen (ITV) 2005 and the first series of Great British Menu (BBC) 2006. Apart from that it's just been guest appeances AFAIK.

They do repeat them a lot. Rhodes Across India is currently being repeated. So is Open Rhodes Around Britain which is a very old BBC series. Probably the inbeween genre of Floyd On Britain and Ireland and Rick Stein's Food Heroes.

It's a pity we don't see more of him on terrestrial. For some reason, possibly totally unjustified, I used to think of him as a "serious" chef compared to, say, Jamie Oliver - too much of a comic - or Gordon Ramsay - PhD in effing and blinding.

All three are serious chefs, but I kind of get what you mean. He is a perfectionist and slight control freak but does come across as more calm and collected in his later series New British Classics (often repeated on Good Food) and when he was on Great British Menu.

In his early days he was more wild and snazzy, with his gelled up hair and chequered trousers and this comes across a little in Open Rhodes (currently being repeated on Good Food)

Look out for a 2006 BBC4 documentary series called "The Way We Cooked". It was in 3 parts, with episodes devoted to Graham Kerr/Fanny Craddock, Delia Smith/Keith Floyd, and Gary Rhodes/Jamie Oliver.

It's repeated on Good Food every so often.

I actually thought in his Rhodes Across.... series he came across as standoffish to the local chefs, also possibly unjustified as he is a very successful chef and possibly surprised at some of the techniques used in different cuisines. To be fair, at the same time he also seemed intrigued and excited by learing and understanding the different methods.
