Why can't his name simply be The Doctor?
Because that's uncanon as his real name now

Davros told us his real name; 'The Destroyer Of Worlds'. Surely with a name like that you'd rather be known as 'The Doctor'

Maybe he's called Doctor Who.

Mcoy was appaling! In my opinion he ruined the entire show! Ive only seen dvds but he was just ridiculous, that gurning and the looks that he gave the camera! And Ace has to be categorically the worst companion ever! It seemed like she was brought into attract the young, hence her name and her attitude! Her whole character was cliched troubled teenager!
Well, there we go; McCoy was my favourite of the three 80s Doctors. Some of his stories, particularly early on, weren't much cop, but I liked McCoy himself. And Ace was one of my favourite companions, and far from a cliche in my opinion.

Tragically the Doctor's name really is John Smith, something so dull he pretends it's an alias.

The reason "John Smith" is such a common name in the UK is because the Doctor spent so much time here. On Gallifray the name is quite exotic

The Doctor changed his name by deed poll just as The Ultimate Warrior did so his real name is now The Doctor

How many DVDs, as a matter of interest? Because McCopy was one of my favourites, particularly in his last season. His first is admittedly atrocious, but you can hardly blame that on the actor-he was doing what the director asked him to do.

Didn't the Doctor get called by his name in the classic series, either in The Deadly Assassin or by Drax in The Armageddon Factor?
In deed Drax calls him Theta Sigma i think, or possibly Peter Sigma?

in the Armageddon Factor

Theta Sigma. Eighth and eighteenth letters of the Greek alphabet.

Hey, I actually quite liked McCoy as The Doctor (although nobody could beat Tom Baker as he is The Doctor of my age group)
I'm old enough to remember the very first episode of Dr Who with William Hartnell, but for me David Tennant beats the old lot hands down. Matt Smith is shaping up nicely as his successor too.
