Finally caught up with this week's installment:
And, yup, another good'un, and better than last week, I thought.
Karen's 'Amy Pond' was much better in this episode. We actually saw her character reacting to things: the look of wonderment at the reveal of the 'oxygen factor', and concern over the Doctor leaving her. Simple, obvious reactions which have been oddly lacking these past few weeks.
And, OK, so it was a bit 'Carry On Doctor', and clearly done for laughs, but I didn't even mind the seduction scene at the end. It's an interesting choice to portray the new companion as, well, as a bit of 'go-er', but the performances in that scene were quite convincing. Smith consumately delivered the facade of a chaste Doctor, but one teetering on the precipice of temptation in the face of Amy's amorous entreaties. Was it worry over STIs that held him back?
So, it looks like the Doctor will be playing agony aunt/cupid next week as he strives to get Amy's relationship with Rory back on track! Will Amy still be bitter at his rejection tho'?
Again, another strong week for Alex Kingston - really liking her now, and I look forward to further appearances. Also, Moffat's certainly enjoying playing with his timelines...we now have River hinting at the events of the finale, plus a glimpse of a future Doctor!
So, yes, 'Flesh & Stone' was just a good story well told, I thought. It didn't try to be complex or meaningful - it went for mood and atmosphere and, for the most part, succeeded. And the performances were competent throughout.
If I had to pick at something, I thought more could have been made of Father Octavian's predicament before he died - I didn't quite think the true horror of his impending demise came out well enough. That *should* have been more powerful than it was...but I found a bit 'blah, blah, blah...'.
Anyway, I voted 'good'...
