When I read the thread title, I must admit I laughed out loud. But I watched the video and it's so sad!

They'll all be crying in their cornflakes this morning and next they'll be in the pet section laughing about the half eaten blackbird their cat just brought to them
A very good point Mr S!

That is just so sad.
I agree that the cat is not doing CPR, just padding, but it doesn't make the video any less sad. The cat knows something is very wrong and he's trying to make it right. When he laid down next to his friend my heart just broke for him. So sad, I shouldn't have watched

Well it's not a "Heroic Cat CPR" or any of that melodramatic silly nonsense, but yeah, it still is pretty horrible.

Little cat grieving for its buddy basically. Nothing spectacular, but totally heart-breaking nonetheless.

Thats truly tragic

Poor wee cat trying to save his little girlfriend in vain...

Anyone who says animals dont have the same feelings and emotions as humans would be hard pressed to maintain that argument after seeing that.

Some of you might hate me for asking this, but do any of you really believe the standing cat was giving cardiac massage to the other one?

I like cats, but I think there's a danger of some people giving human attributes to animal behaviour here. Reading the look on the cat's face..... People wouldn't know simply from the cat's face what was going on, so I don't get that at all - nothing about that cat's face says "Not too much pressure - could break ribs. Do it for a count of 5, then pause to check for breathing, & don't forget to check the pupils". The text & the sad music make this footage into the story. Change the text & music, & it would be interpreted very differently - put the "Eye of the Tiger" as the backing track, & say that the cats had been fighting, then one lay down & you could say the standing cat was taunting it wanting it to keep fighting.

It's very easy to manipulate footage, & as a result influence thinking. It's sad to hear of a cat dying from being hit by a vehicle, but anything else added to this story is pure speculation. Now if someone told me the standing cat yelled "Where's the f-ing crash team?" I might be more convinced, but cardiac massage? Purr-lease.
Of course I don't think the cat was actually administrating CPR. I do however believe he was trying to stimulate his mate to move. As for the look on his face, to me, all I ment was he looked sad/anxious. You've read much to much into my posts.

This says it too:

I don't believe it was trying to give CPR - I think it was probably wondering why the other cat was laid still, and wanted him to get up. He sensed something was wrong and was trying his best to get the attention of the other cat, but obviously it was already dead. Then he gave up and settled down beside it to keep it company or protect it. Cats do experience emotions, but I doubt it knows anything about CPR

I think the video was definitely sad - with or without the music. I had my speakers off for a while and it was still upsetting to watch

No, I haven't, because I wasn't going by your post. I was going by the info on the site the link in the OP took us to. As I said further in the thread, I don't doubt animals experience emotions, but the stuff about the look in his face & especially the stuff about him doing cardiac massage was taking it a tad too far.

I've no doubt he was in distress and trying to revive his friend. However he, and we, may inturrpret that.

It's only had it's tail run over, that wouldn't kill it surely!
Perhaps the shock gave it a heart attack.

I really wish I hadn't watched it. I'm in floods of tears now. That's very sad. Bless him, and her.

That's a great talent. What a shame it didn't kick in before you wrote that I was reading much too much into your posts - still, you can't have everything.

I've no doubt he was in distress and trying to revive his friend.
Which no-one has disputed, & is far more likely than the descriptive embellishments given to this on that site. "Heroic"? The cats weren't positioned on a busy motorway with traffic whizzing by either side of them, they weren't on a little bit of land surrounded by swirling water, he wasn't fending off a lion, so where's the heroism? "His beau, his darling"? They didn't film the events & there's nothing to say they even knew the cats, so that's just emotive language by someone who's either deliberately trying to get a reaction or has a fondness for exaggeration.

Strange when my tom cat was dying of cancer his mum wouldn't have anything to do with him . It was like she sensed the end was close. Previously they had been inseparable. Cats aren't known for thinking of others and certainly not their human owners! there always has to be a pay out for them

Actually it did. I thought though if I wrote it you'd come back with, 'actually no, I was just joking.' The two get out clauses.

I know cats are usually selfish b*ggers. However, a few years ago I was grieving badly after a death. My mums' (Seperate flats.) cat would not leave me alone. Followed me everywhere, slept on my bed, ect. A few weeks later I thanked him and told him I felt a little better and he went back to his usual routine. He's passed now too, God bless you Billy.

I thought that at first but didn't you see the look on his face. I don't think he was doing it out of happiness.
They do it to comfort themselves as well when they're distressed.

I certainly think he could have been mourning the other cat but I don't think he was trying to save it. I seriously doubt a cat would have the intelligence to carry out a cardiac massage!
