I was struggling to like Amy before this, now I will dislike her even more I think, she has no redeeming features, OK she has helped the Doctor out in some situations, but we now will see her for what she is, poor Rory, he seems so nice too, robotic, but nice

Agreed. I've no idea how this is supposed to endear Amy to the audience.

It simply comes down to 'old school' versus 'new school' Doctor Who fans.

Old school want pure sci-fi, lots of aliens, clever plots and gadgets and a totally asexual Doctor.

New school fans are much more comfortable with Doctor Who in the context of today's TV world. Are more accepting of the fact that times have moved on and a bit of romance and flirting serves the very vital purpose of attracting a MUCH wider audience - if you can get young girls/women to have a crush on the Doctor that gives you a whole different consumer base that you never had back in the 70s, 80s etc.

It's just the way it is now, so stop moaning about it. If the show hadn't modernised, it wouldn't be getting the viewing figures it is now, and it would get cancelled again. I'd rather have a "sexied-up" Doctor Who, than no Doctor Who at all!!!

makes it even worse, IMO. Is she the village bike of Leadworth that everyone's had a ride on?

The 'context' of Dr Who is that it's a sci-fi/fantasy programme put out in the early evening with a popular audience of a lot of young children. Dr Who should remain Dr Who, not try and turn itself into Hollyoaks. If Moffat can't create storylines that don't involve such nonsense that I'm going to have serious second thoughts about his suitability as the programme's show runner. In the 60s, 70s and 80s we had companion after companion that didn't want to screw the Doctor and now since it's been reintroduced 3 out of 4 of them do. Don't try and tell me that it's necessary as it simply isn't.”

Woah!!! That is a bit harsh is it not? Surely Moff will know more about running a successful franchise more than you and I will vere know...after all people often have gone about saying RTD doesn't know a thing, yet here we are five years of successful Who...and Moff will continue it....you may not like it....but there will be others

And at least wait till the whole thing has aired before coming to that conclusion...for all we know it could be played for laughs as was the kiss between Donna and the Doctor

Doctor Who has ALWAYS reflected the times around it and if it pretended that it was still the 80's it'd fail in a season. Fact is sex is now utterly integrated into our world, kids are FAR more comfortable and switched on to the concept than they were when I was growing up and TV needs to acknowledge and adapt to this to stay relevant. Frankly I'd have said that the scene under discussion is actually less shocking in real terms than... oh, let's say Peri's introduction? Or Leela's outfit?

Should there be full on sex scenes in Doctor Who? No, that's ridiculous. Should there be acknowledgment that good looking gentlemen who radiate power and confidence tend to be attractive to members of the opposite sex? Hell yes provided it is done in a way that doesn't leave parents with too many awkward questions to answer which every single thing I've read from the Daily Fail article would indicate it covers nicely.

I mean, and call me crazy here, explaining to your child why someone would kiss the Doctor might actually be a good way of introducing them to the concept. Again, it all comes down to taking responsibility for what your children watch and making a decision on what's appropriate for them. But I've gotta say I hope Moffat never ever listens to the vocal minority because they clearly don't have the first clue about how to make a successful TV show in 2010 and would kill it off faster than a Weeping Angel in a blacked out room.”

Excuse me....but you'll find that I'm the Only Crazzy here!!!

Moff never really listens to "fans"....I remember him clearly saying in the confidentail for The Girl in the Fireplace, that he didn't care if the kiss in that story had upset fans....

As I said in a different topic which I mentioned that there was some leaked audio from VotD which was the TC basically called Matt a bad actor ect however a much like the spoilers which the Daily Mail had released today its something which could be taken out context way too easily. So until the episode has aired all i am saying is anything could happen.

it may have been intended to come across as harsh but it made me laugh so hard because it seems to come from a presumption that anyone really gives a sh*t if that poster has "second thoughts" about SM suitability to be showrunner, when the reality is that no one gives a damn, least of all SM himself who would doubtless find the comment as amusing as I did, if not more so!

Must admit I do wonder if SM does a quick tot-up on-line of those who stay stuff like that and has a whiteboard with For/Against figures. I suspect seeing something like 8,000,000 to 3 would brighten your day somewhat

I'd rather have no Doctor Who than a modernised version that bears no resemblance to the original. I don't care whether young girls watch it or not-my sole criteria for judging it is whether I enjoy it. Put me down as old school.

I don't think its as simple as Old school fans versus new....as there are many inbetween...for example those who grew up with the classic series, and have no issues with the so called "modernised" series, and those like me who became fans of New first and in a timey wimey way...became fans of the old too...and can appreciate both eras. Having romance and stuff in Doctor Who isn't vital....the Doctor-Donna relationship proved that, many young girls still watched....but romance/sex isn't also a turn-off for when it does happen in the new series for majority of the audience....there isn't a cry for it, and there isn't a cry against....in each case if anyone does have strong feelings one way or the other, they tend to be in the minority

And seriously, (this isn't at you grumpyoldbat) considering that Moff had played with sexual politics in the empty child two parter..and then plenty of flirting in The Girl in the fireplace.....is this really anything new in terms of Moff's work???

RTD wrote romances, Moff loved to play with sexaul behavior and flirting....and I think it is the latter that we are getting in series 5.....nothing new in terms of Moff's stories that we had in the past five years...

I fall into a similar category as you - I loved the original series when I was growing up, and I'm enjoying the "new" Doctor Who just as much, just in a different way. I think what I was trying to say is there are some people who will never be happy unless Doctor Who is like it used to be. For example, tingramretro above!

Oh I wouldn't class Ting in that.....he never seems to be consistant in what he wants....sometimes its about wanting to go back to how it was, then sometimes its about how it should have been more grown up/adult like the books were in the haitus period....sometimes its about wanting spaceships and creepy monsters and not stories like Midnight that explore human nature and are full of depths...and then its appreciation for the likes of the Beast Below because it does exactly that...exploration of human nature and depth......

I tend to end up feeling very confused when talking to him....

So you have a sexual problem...be it physical or psychological - why leap to conclusions based on leaks from a right wing newspaper (and I use the word...wrongly) just because of your own personal hangups? Oh well...so long as "everyone" you have mentioned it to agrees with you then who cares what the actual episode is like, the context, the ramifications for future threads/plotlines or indeed the characters...you and everyone have once again dealt with it with your immensely powerful psychic ability.

Also the Daily Mail has always had issues with the current version of who anyway, so why not release a story where it could cause mass out rage which in turn (possibly hurts the ratings) Then again it could equally backfire and push the ratings up. As I said prior we SHOULD NOT jump to conclusions just yet, wait till the episode and scene leading up to it plays out.

I think I might do something radical and just watch it before I make any real judgements about what's going on.

I would like to protest in the strongest terms at this sensible, logical and thoroughly decent approach to what is clearly a subject that requires preconceptions, psychological problems rooted in childhood and the ability to decry prior to the event...Tumpy? You should be ashamed of yourself for being so rational.

Hehe, the best approach imo.

Personally, I even trust that it will all make perfect sense in hindsight (latest by the end/finale of the show ).
