Reducing noise on a Humax Foxsat HDR ?
I have had the Humax HDR for a month and apart from one reboot as a recording started it has been excellent.
However there is a low pitch rumbling / whooshing noise from the hard disc and a bit more of a whooshing noise when the fan kicks in after an hour or so, probably accentuated by the unit being in the corner of the room with a bare wooden floor. I am experimenting with having the HDD removed from it's carrier and sitting on small pieces of foam inside, and no cooling fan ![]() Any comments on running without the fan ? The HDD has plenty of space inside so air can circulate ? |

Personally I would not run without the fan. My HDD (1TB) is mounted externally in a drop in cradle connected by a esata cable and powered externally. It's inaudible unless you get very close. Without the HDD load on the power supply you might get away without the fan. My fan is mounted over the cpu heatsink but never heard it run.

Just a thought - if your Humax is sitting directly on the floor, maybe there is not enough cooler air circulating beneath it. Mine sits on a shelf of a glass TV stand and I have never heard fans or any noise like that.
Also, if it is directly on the floor, that would act as a soundboard which is perhaps where the rumble is coming from. |

I've never heard mine make a noise in fact I have had my hand down the back of it a couple of times to make sure I could feel some air circulation (to indicate the fan was running).
I must admit the Humax is the quietest PVR I have ever had (if it only it would work after a power cut). |

Thanks for the replies, it is sitting on a glass TV stand in the corner of the room, not directly on the floorboards.
I guess I'm sensitive to the low rumble now I've noticed it. Did some experimenting today and found the metal plate which covers one side of the HDD is acting like a drum skin and vibrating, so now it has some foam between the HDD and baseplate to deaden it. Will see how it sounds now. |

Will see how it sounds now. I have mine on a glass stand also and to reduce the noise I have put a black rubber mat (car mat) cut to size under it. It certainly helps. |

We have a V+ downstairs that had a nasty low level rumble when sitting on the shelf below the TV however I had some spare Sorbothane material (blue spongy stuff) knocking around and made 4 little feet for the V+ to rest on and that cured the rumble.

I too wouldn't risk running it without the fan. Electronics hate heat from a longetivity and reliability point of view.
Personally, I'd try sticking some rubber feet on it something like this: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=1840 or alternatively (or as well as) getting a small rubber mat something like these (although some cutting would be required) http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=217645 or http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/pr...h-3mm-1000mm-x , and sitting it on that. You could even use sound deading material for cars as a base platform provided it was the hard type so let air still flow around the chassis such as http://www.lowcostcaraudio.co.uk/lcc...769?afid=88888 although obviously you'd want to leave the backing on as I can'#t imagine you wanting to stick it to the floor. |

I had a bit of noise when the disc was recording, nothing too excessive.
![]() To ensure plenty of ventilation around it I have used 4 black rubber doorstops (the ones you screw to to skirting board) they only cost a few pence from a hardware shop. I have put a little self adhesive felt pad on top of each one and placed them underneath the HDR by the feet. Works a treat, unit works silently as it stops any "drumming" and ensures plenty of ventilation. ![]() Mikembe |

Thanks again for the replies, I now have the HDD back in it's enclosure as it was originally and the fan connected. The foam between the HDD and baseplate has stopped the rumbling noise so now it is pretty damn quiet.
I will make up some sort of foam or rubber mat or feet to go underneath as well. As far as the warranty is concerned I'm certainly not sitting here for 12 month listening to a droning hum when i can sort it out myself ![]() Hope this might be useful to someone else sometime. |

Iv'e had my foxsat-hdr since the weekend & if it is the fan it makes a noise similar to that you hear in a central heating rad. It's a bit annoying as my 5-yr old pace twin digital didn't make a murmur. It's only audible on quite scenes but it's annoying enough for me to have to switch off when the tv isn't on.
Don't think it's curable in my case. I've held the unit with both hands to see if the noise is being transmiited via the shelf it sits on but doesn't make a scrap of difference ![]() Does anyone have a silent one which might mean I have a duff one? |

I think it all depends on the hard drive, each one is different and may be totally silent or vibrating or rumbling
![]() Mine is much better since installing some foam to deaden the faceplate of the HDD. In fact i can now hear the surround sound amp has a 50hz hum !! something else to take apart and sort out

Youre only getting the noise because its on the floor and its in the corner, both are reflecting the noise right at you.
Mine is on a TV stand shelf and the only noise I ever here is when it clicks on or off. |
