Yes but the hypocrisy of the post is that you have an issue with someone saying that Derrick is forgotton....yet you are quick to say that we should forget RTD and his era as a thing of the past...in fact you have said in another thread once, exactly what Poppy said that RTD will be forgotton...
You really can't help yourself can you...one rule for other fans and another for you!!! |

Difference is, people aren't harping on about Derek, or Philip Hinchcliffe or any of the others every five minutes. I don't see any threads titled 'I wonder what Derrick and Phil think', even though that would be neither more nor less valid a question. I mention these two, incidentally, since they're the only classic Who producers still alive.

If anyone here tells me they knew who produced their childhood series of Doctor Who and their associated body of work BEFORE they watched it on VHS/DVD as an adult I will happily call them mistaken (whilst thinking of a stronger term.) In New Who, RTD took on the role of evangelist to go out into the media and really show how much fun this series could be for children and adults alike: he put his head above the parapet spearheading a juggernaut of a publicity machine which is no small part responsible for the far reaching success of the programme today. He didn't have to: he knew he needed to and that has paid off in spite of the vitriole such as the "I hope RTD gets AIDS and dies" form of posts that were rife during his first series. We know who the Doctor Who production team are because we make it our business to find out - no one else really cares so long as the programme when delivered is an enjoyable watch...we would all do well to remember that of the 7-10 million viewers we laud as "fantastic" each week, we are but a small minority: most just want to watch good television. |

You don't seem to understand that the vast majority of the viewing public couldn't give a stuff who produces (or writes) programmes so long as they enjoy them.

Yes, but I'm not entirely sure how that's relevant. I'm talking about attitudes on here, and surely everyone here is as capable of asking how a producer from 1970 would feel about the new series as one from 2009. They just don't.

What gets me is that if RTD had written that last scene he'd have been lambasted by the usual suspects on here for ruining their vision of what Dr Who should be, but as SM has written it it's apparently hilarious and totally in keeping with Amy's character, who let's not forget is apparently a throwback to the companions seen in Classic Who.
The hypocrisy and double standards never ceases to amaze me. Who knows what RTD thinks? But I know what I think so far and my feelings are of disappointment. I so want to love Series 5 because I have loved Doctor Who since the 60s. But I hate to say that I've been underwhelmed by it so far. Matt Smith is terrific, don't get me wrong. But I'm unconvinced by Karen Gillen, who seems very one note. And, oh God, the scripts have been a mess, with the exception of the first one. The production values have nosedived and everything seems so rushed. And the season story arc is laboured. The positives still outweigh the negatives for me; but at the moment it's a close-run thing. |
