Have any of your pets ever been killed in the road?

We had a dog named Bobby. Fluffy white bichon frise, we had him for several years. One year, at the the start of May (about now-ish) he managed to dig a hole under our garden fence and escaped.

He was missing for several hours, then a neighbour bought him to our door crying hysterically saying she had just ran him over and how sorry she was but he just ran out. He had no road sense at all.

His white coat was saturated in blood and he was struggling to breathe, she passed him to my dad who wrapped him up in a blanket and phoned the emergency vet. Within the 20 minutes she took to arrive, he had already died.

I was about 8 or 9 and I cried solidly for about 2 months, to the point where my teacher would send me home from school because I was such a mess.

He was like a best friend to us, he came with us everywhere every day and at night he would even get in bed with us and stay there under the covers until the morning. Of course I am over it now but it was just horrible watching one of my bestest friends die on our porch floor at that age.

RIP Bobby, still sadly missed

Sorry to hear that but I don't think we want stories of peoples pets being run over it's too depressing.

No it's never happened to me. I've always lived in rural areas.

It must be sad though for anyone it happens to,

Not killed thankfully but my previous cat was hit by a car and suffered a broken jaw and some spinal damage. I lived on a tiny island on the Shetland Isles at the time with barely any traffic, so she was very unfortunate.

When I was a kid one of our Dachshunds, Hank escaped the garden and got hit on the A1.

Very bad, I picked him up out of the central reservation, he was so broken he bit me in fear and pain. he made it to the vets, but had to be put to sleep.

Very very dark time for our house and even darker for me. We lost a wonderful cat to the road. We spent days waiting for "biscuit" to come home and we were told by a neighbor that a cat like ours had been seen on the road I checked only to be told the council had taken it away. So I had to go to where they are taken, put in a freezer for a week, then disposed of. I have never cried before that day when confronted with the death of a pet as my parents would do the nasty bits and tell me a nice story that made me feel good about our loss. It was me that let her out of the cat flap and I have to live with the fact that I as good as killed my cat. That was twenty years ago and I get so sad every time it comes in to my head which is often. All our cats have a harness with a lead and never leave the garden, I love my cats past and present and pay the price for a mistake that should never have happened. Guilt has a heavy price.

Yes, about 5-8 years ago. Our cat, called Spud, went out one day like usual but he came back looking swollen, ill and was very nervous around us. About half an hour later he was dead. We buried him in our back garden so as far as I know he is still in that garden (we don't live there anymore). I was too young at the time to be really upset about it.

Worse thing was the scum who ran him over probably didn't give a hoot about it and carried on as if nothing happened. There were a lot of scumbags around when we lived there so I'm glad we don't anymore.

Lost two cats to roads, one 16yrs since and one six years since, thankfully they both died instantly, but it still upsets me after all this time

No - touch wood.
My last dog was put to sleep, she was very ill.

Slightly OT, but yesterday, a seagull was found injured in the road, opposite my house it was "blocking the traffic" so someone moved it to the grass area - so I'm told.

& my mother spotted it later on & she was concerned.
It was bloodied, it couldn't fly, so she had the RSPCA out.

I'm glad, 'cuz with the yobs around, it would have been kicked to death.

I do know of a person who was driving & they had the window open, & the dog jumped out of it & was killed by the car behind.

Yes I lost my cat Muffin to a road accident. Fortunately the person who knocked her down, took her to the RSPCA centre, and I was able to find her within 24 hours, as she was chipped.

I never knew who it was, but was so grateful to them that they didn't leave her just lying there.

Yes, 2 weeks ago today our beautiful cat Cosworth, he was always a roamer so we weren't too worried until we got to 3 days missing. After that and no sign we did all the usual, posters, vets etc, then we were told by a neighbour that a cat matching his description had been seen on the dual carriageway next to a couple of badgers.

I phoned the council and described him and they confirmed it was him (he had a very distinctive face). The heart-breaking thing is he wasn't chipped, he had a collar but he must have lost it, so the council couldn't let us know and they disposed of him, we never got to say goodbye. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get your pets microchipped if they aren't already, all my other 5 are now done.

I don't think I'll ever get over the guilt of losing Cossie, i feel responsible, I should have got him in that night, not been so blase about him not coming home and IF he had been chipped I would have been able to bring him home.

Yes. One killed, one survived. My 15 year old cat Helen was run over when she was less than a year old, and she had to have a front leg amputated. That was when we lived in a city. And our other cat, Tony was only 6 months old when he was run over outside this house and killed instantly. The impact knocked his eyes out of their sockets. Otherwise not a mark on him.

My neighbours have all lost cats here - one neighbour has lost 10 or more over 20 years. The other has lost several.

30 ears ago my first beautiful puss had part of her tail amputated due to being run over by a car then several months later she was hit a glancing blow from a train and died of shock. Later my handsome boy Perry was run over by a container truck near our house it seems he was in a right mess and I'm glad I didn't see him, the local council took him away despite me having posters up all over the place and one opposite were he got hit no one came to tell me it was a week or two before I found out and I was going out several times a day to look for him.

Since that time I've had house cats, on the advice of my vet he said the amount of time's cats have been brought in to the surgery and cannot be saved or killled outright due to cars breaks his heart. My vets view is that years ago it was ok to let your cat out but now with so many cars he said it's like russian roulette every time you let them out unless you live in the country side or make a cat run in your garden.

My sympathy to all who have lost pets you never forget and at the moment I'm caring for my 18 year girl who has renal failure, her sister lost her fight to this at the end of January as very sad time for us all.

I am truly sorry that you lost a cat but really would question whether people like your neighbour who has had ten cats killed should have cats at all or at least cats that are allowed out. We chose our last three properties on the basis that they were all very cat firendly- cul-de-sacs, away from main roads.

I personally couldn't bear to have a cat if I lived on a busy road. I would never be able to relax at all.

People have more a farming mentality round here - we are in a rural place by the river so water rats are a problem in our gardens. People have cats to keep the rat population down, not just to look cute. I'm not a mad cat person - for me it's essentially a working animal, and it would be no use to us stinking the house out with its litter tray sitting around all the time. I think it's cruel to keep them as house pets but I know people opt to do that and fair enough. It's just they aren't simply pets here - more a necessity.

My cat Charlie was hit by a car a couple of years ago, a school boy who lives a few doors away came and got me. Charlie was still alive when I reached him so I gently scooped him up in my arms and ran back to the house. I was going to call the emergency vet but I could see Charlie was too injured to be saved so I sat with him in my arms stroking him until he passed away about 2 minutes later. He was purring and looking at me as he died. Most upsetting experience I have had with regards to one of pets. I was just glad that I could be there to hold him as he passed away. It would have broken my heart if he had died hurt and alone.

To add, we live in a cul-de-sac estate. Suppose the driver just didn't see him or he just ran out in front of the car.

I found one of my cats dead in the back garden. We live in a quiet cul-de-sac , two streets back from a main road, and she must have climbed fences at the back to get there.

I was at work when I got a call from a neighbour to say that he'd seen her running through his garden looking a bit shocked. She didn't have a mark on her, apart from her bottom jaw which was slack and lop-sided...Poor little baby.
