After reading some of the positive posts on this last episode one of the common comments were that Matt smith appears to be imimtating David Tenant's Doctor. I just don't see it, in fact I see more of a Troughton,Davidson and touch of the Bakers in him.

Are fans still suffering from DT withdrawal? Do you think the critics of the latest series would be more forgiving if DT was still in the role?

I don't really associate Matt Smith's Doctor with any of the earlier ones, he is his OWN Doctor and a bloody good one at that

I have enjoyed all three of the new Who Doctors, as each was unique and brought something new to the role. I honestly couldn't rate any one of them more than the others, they are all awesome.

How many more threads like this do we need?

As far as I can tell reaction to MS has been extremely positive. I have seen very few people in the episode thread comparing him to DT at all.

Imitating is the wrong word....because then one could say he is imitating Troughton and the others too...

I'd say he was channeling the other Doctors....he started with Tennant in TEH....but now by the end of episode 5, he channels more of Troughton, and for me also a bit of Colin, and even McCoy....but overall he seesm to be becoming what to me is Eleven...for example last night the way he was talking to Father Octavion who was about to die, was different to all the Doctors.....

I can't compare him with previous doctors except to say I wasn't really convinced by him until the last two parter. Now he is the doctor as far as I'm concerned and he brings his own uniqueness to the role.

Bag on with those two.

You have some Doctors that appear confident and always two steps ahead of their enemies.

With Troughton and Davidson the were more panicky and seem to be losing more than they were winning until the end.

I much prefer this sort of Doctor.

Tom Baker and Peter Davidson were the doctors I grew up with, so they are my favourites

I haven't quite reached that point with him yet. He's still very much 'the bloke playing the Doctor' for me, rather than simply 'the Doctor'.

I have a horrible feeling he's going to be my re-bound Doctor.

MS is quite different to DT in that his Doctor - at least at this moment - is flawed and not fully up to everything yet, whereas DT was omniscient, almost God-like (the Timelord victorious theme).

I like both styles but they are inherently different to me. Ten was usually so full of himself that the only thing getting him down to Earth was losing someone or something he cared about. But this REALLY took him down.

Eleven is oscillating between being brilliant and being clueless, leaving him more vulnerable and volatile.

Both good doctors imo (but I really like CE a lot, he was just the right mixture of cockiness without Ten's arrogance) DT was cuter though, but then again, as eye candy, I am all for Jack

I'm sure that in an interview with the actress who plays River song that she said that the episodes were shot out of sequence and that this story was really the first epsodes filmed, I may be wrong...but if that is the case then as far as I'm concerned both Matt and Gillan put in good performances which will only get better once they settle ionto their roles imo..

As for MS as the doctor when I first heard the news I thought jesus no, but I take it all back and he is fast becoming one of my favorite Doctors ever and thats comming from someone who for many many years only ever saw Tom Baker as the doctor...I enjoyed the 2 part story and hope that under Moffat's belt the show will go from strengh to strength...

As far as comparisons go between DT and MS, well they are supposed to be the same person, so it's not that unusual for MS to show some of DT's traights to begin with and he is filiing some pretty big shoes at the moment but give him some time and imo he will find his own unique way of portraying the doc....

tennent's doing quite well in the snooker final on bbc2, though he does seem to be losing his hair.

DT was my rebound Doctor (if I'm understanding the metaphor right...)

I loved Chris Eccleston in the role, and I loved the interaction he had with Rose and Jack. It took me at least a series to enjoy David Tennant as the Doctor, and I didn't really 'get' him until he was partnered with Donna. Then the specials got so overblown that I was just ready for him to go.

Matt Smith came along at the right time for me, and while CE is still my favourite of the new Doctors, I think that will have changed by the end of the series, judging on what we've seen so far. MS is utterly convincing in the role.

Agreeing with most of the above. MS is shaping up to be an excellent Doctor. I've never had a problem with the Doctor changing - I've been watching since Tom Baker as well. I do think that the scripts DT was passed towards the end of his tenure, and presumably the direction he was given, over-egged his characterisation considerably, the Doctor of the second series was, IMO somhwhat better.

Well, aside from one "ha!" last night, this Doctor is his own man.

And aside from his always telling people who are about to die to "shut up" and not being sympathetic..and also not doing the "angry at humans for their actions" part as well, he is a good Doctor who is still finding his feet, at least for me.

Rebound Doctor is the best term I think....it'll take a while before he changes from "A Very good actor playing The Doctor" to "THE Doctor" imo...

I've noticed that as well!
I keep expecting him to to change the TARDIS from a police box into a yellow mini.
