10 things I loved about the “Bedroom Scene”
The “bedroom scene” seems to have recieved a lot of criticism, but I thought it was terrific, and really made a good episode even better. For all the following reasons:
1. It was extremely funny. 2. At last, the Doctor is again being treated as an “alien father figure”. Unlike the previous Doctor, this Doctor fully appreciates that he is not human and much older than Amy, so a relationship would be out of the question. This Doctor is grand and mysterious again, and this scene really confirms that. 3. Finally, a bit of sexual desire in the show! I’ve often thought TV shows are too sterile when it comes to sexual desire. We all have sexual desires, yet this is somehow excluded from TV as though it’s a negative quality! As Moffat himself said: is it really so strange to think that some of the Doctor’s companions might have found him attractive? Of course not. Don’t get me wrong: I’ve never been a fan of gratuitous, explicit sex scenes in drama (it always seems out of place), but this was far from a gratuitous, explicit sex scene! 4. I like how they tied the episode back into the first episode. I loved the Eleventh Hour and it was a delight to see her house again. It almost has a sense of revisiting the first episode (like a “Back To The Future Part II” thing). I suspect there may be more of this to come, too! ![]() 5. I love how at end of this adventure, rather than just walking back to the TARDIS as usual (where the episode usually ends), we actually get to see them go somewhere new and different. These episodes have seemed too short lately so I was all ready for it to end on that other planet This extra scene was really an unexpected treat. 6. I loved the TARDIS being in the corner of a small bedroom. I’ve never seen it parked anywhere quite so “personal” before and it looked sort of pretty, and funny too. The set was nicely lit. 7. After such a big adventure in an alien world, I really liked the way they took the episode back to a very ordinary earth setting (5 minutes after they were last there, too!). It reminds us that the TARDIS really can take us anywhere and anywhen. It gives the episode a bit of contrast, and makes the world of Doctor Who seem less like a bunch of episodes shot separately on different locations, and more like they have this real spaceship that they can zip around in at a whim — which is how you’d use it in real life. 8. It’s also a real treat for the “series story arc” to be given so much prominence so early on in the series. I was expecting the crack to show up randomly in the background somewhere in every episode, and to be largely ignored until the final episode (as has always been done, like with “Bad Wolf” for example). But this bedroom scene brought the crack to the forefront, by having the Doctor discuss it at the very end of the episode. Rather than being episodic and interchangable, this series is seeming more and more like a serial — something that makes you want to keep watching week after week to see what will happen next. I really love that. I love what Moffat has done to the show! ![]() 9. Did I mention, Karen Gillan is incredibly hot, and it was a very sexy scene. Maybe not everyone out there tunes in to Doctor Who to perv on the companion, but certainly a lot of us do, and to us, seeing Amy getting somewhat horny on the bed was a sight to behold. Not to mention all the great leg shots! I love a girl in tights! 10. Just to make this ten points… the script was brilliant for this scene (and all the others). The line about Amy taking her engagement ring off was particularly funny, I thought. So for me this scene really made all the difference. (Speaking of bedrooms, time I was off myself…) |

I wasn't a huge fan of the scene but I liked your post and I agree with a lot of the points you raised!

According to a fairly large poll on GB only 20% or so of people had a problem with the scene. So the question should actually be.....hope YOUR not too lonely in there.

I liked the little sequence at the end too.
Gloom of Whom, do you usually go around smelling actresses? |

As Moffat himself said: is it really so strange to think that some of the Doctor’s companions might have found him attractive? Of course not. Personally, I go with the idea that after Tennant's Doctor said goodbye to Rose in parallel world, leaving her with 10.5, he realised he couldn't have a relationship with a human. He pointed out that, the reason why he left him with her, was because he could age and would die like her, whereas he wouldn't and would long outlive her and anyone else that he had a relationship with. That's what he's on about with the bit about his age and being a Time Lord compared to her being a human, anything long term couldn't happen as it's inevitable that he'd long outlive them, and when they're 80 and grey he'd maybe look, what, 10 years older? And still have hundreds of years left on that regeneration alone. On topic, I also liked the scene. Very fitting to Moffat's humour. |

I thought it was a really good scene and fitted in with Amy's character very well. She was a stripogram after all, plus she's a young woman with 'needs'
. If you combine that with a close brush with death then it's understandable that she'd be feeling in the mood for a bit of nooky.

Wishful thinking - she was a kissogram - there's a difference. After all it's a show aimed at kids as well as adults

I think we need to just watch a few more episodes ... we don't really know who Amy is yet, except that she was a kissogram!
How that happened, we don't know - but, in the course of her job, and being attractive as she is, it's within character that she feels that she has a sexual power over men - otherwise they wouldn't hire her for being attractive. And she wouldn't be able to afford that expensive policewoman outfit! So, after an incredibly intense near-death experience on another planet with a handsome imaginary friend - she must think she's in a dream and tries to steer the fantasy in her direction. |

But if she wasn't? I reckon he'd have gone for it! And frankly, who could blame him?!

I didn't have problem with it, as it finally put to rest the romance angle, plus it was funny.
I don't like talking about karen too much as my opinions of her are totally biased by how hot she is. (sorry I'm weak)

I liked it, it didn't come out of anywhere, and was perfectly in keeping with what we know of the character, and why she's been so keen to impress the Doctor.

Oh, and I should point out that the Tenth Doctor also knew a relationship between him and Rose wouldn't have worked out either - he just never had to fend her off!

Agreed
Though I'm not actually against dr/companion romances (just not EVERY companion).
