Dare I think it...MS better than DT?
There's something about Matt Smith whilst watching his time as the Doctor that's made me think...maybe just maybe he has unleashed better qualities than DT did.
I know its early days yet, and I'm not bashing DT...I was one of the ones that first criticised Matt when I found out he was to be the Doctor, and 'morned' Tennant's stepping down of the role. But I don't know - something about Matt has made me think that maybe he has excelled all of the qualities that Ten had and perhaps is doing a better, more mysterious, funnier, wittier, and maybe even slighty darker role. *prepares for the hate* |

Yes, he is. Best Doctor since Paul McGann.

I still think DT is better but in many ways it's unfair to compare the 2 because they are two very different people, very different actors, very different doctors.

to be honest, i think a lot of people thought/think this.
but it remains that one of the "essences" about the show is that the doctor changes. whether you miss dt or not a point of the show is to portray how a timelord feels when he regenerates. i think some people needed to give ms a chance before they started saying how rubbish he would be. IMO, he has shown everyone, like you said that he can be a fantastic doctor. |

DT's Doctor was a good one and I was sad to see him leave the part. MS has excelled in the role and his Doctor is coming across as a more detached alien Doctor. I'm glad he's doing well and has been widely accepted.

Yes you are correct there, but as you pointed out you prefer DT, so you do see DT as being the better out of the two right?
Liking MS in the role though

For me it's a combination of different things, and my own expectations (which might be wrong) of what the doctor should be like. I would not want to see MS in some of the DT stories, and I think DT would not work in some of the MS stories.

Tennant is the better actor of the two (unsuprising really considering that he's a member of the royal shakespeare company, whereas Smith simply "fell" into acting) but nevertheless I am thouroughly enjoying Smith's Doctor.

I don't think its necessarily a case of being "better" just that they both brought something good to the role that makes them a believable doctor.

DT became my least favourite Doctor because I felt a lot of his last-year-and-a-bit were taken over by an unhealthy hero-worship and fetishisation of the Doctor (and, indeed of DT himself). At the same time, the humanisation of the tenth Doctor diminished the character for me.
MS does indeed have a much greater alien quality and a more self-contained and occasionally explosive anger which make him seem more inhuman. I feel i couldn't have asked for more! |

In a nutshell - DT was too 'serious'. MS is more 'Fun'

I liked Tennants Doctor a lot but I'm really starting to enjoy Matt Smith as well. He is a completely different type of Doctor to the previous two and at the moment he seems to have a lot less emotional baggage than before, which is also good. It's also good to see people coming on here and admitting they were wrong about MS before he was even seen in the role.

There are definitely a few more layers to this version, making him less predictable, and less sympathetic, but also less tragic.

Smith brings out the Doctor's detached quality. He cares about humans but he also find them annoying whereas Tennant's Doctor seemed to have a better connection with humans. Smith's Doctor tends to say "oh, shut up!" to people and he lives in his own little Doctor Who world. In this respect, he could be the closest we've ever had to an autistic Doctor! Autistic people are disconnected, find it hard to interact with people. I wonder if Matt Smith has a little autism himself and channels it out through his performance? Perhaps.

I don't think you can compare them. I have liked all the actors who have played the Doctor for different reasons. I prefer Matt because he exudes a more 'Doctorly' quality that hasn't been seen since McGann.

From reading what Moffat has said in past, this 11th Doctor has always been planned to go back to a more traditional role based on first 4 doctors behaviour and mannerisms.
Although nothing really wrong with 10s portrayal , it seemed to magnify 9s excitability even further so we ended up with a Doctor who seemed to act more like a 5 year old on Christmas morning combined with the teenager big head who continually likes to shout to everyone how good they are at something. Therefore a more mature adult portrayal does come across as more refreshing and better, which is being pulled of rather nicely by Matt Smith. |

After 40 years or so of watching DW, I'm still of a mind that there are no better/worse Doctors, there are merely different interpretations of a character - there will always be personal preferences (although mine tends to be with the stories the show tells rather than the Doctor who features in them) so don't worry about thinking that MS is better than DT if that's what you believe but I've a feeling when you go back to older episodes you'll remember what DT brought to the role during his tenure irrespective of what MS is bringing to it currently.

I think blue is much better than red or green but especially yellow although now I come to think of it violet and pink are the best too...
Alternatively - I think all the colours make up the spectrum of visible light, and that's how it should be. I thought I liked MS better than DT and CE. I went back and watched Rose,End of the World, Runaway Bride, Blink and loved them. My son is now obsessed with watching CE because he was too young to remember him. So far this new revamped post 2005 series hasn't cast a duff Doctor (Doctor Duff?) and MS just continues that happy success rate for me and everybody I have talked to about it. Let's face it, the very character of The Doctor is a magnetic piece of fiction no matter who plays him. One day they will cast someone unsuitable and we will cringe and be sad. We dodged the bullet this time. Actually, my favourite is cyan.... |

Now it is is firmly here to stay , we can now stat to enjoy different portrayals of the Doctor. |

I loved CE and DT in the role of the Doctor. I also adore MS and if I had to chose, yes he is by far the best IMO.

You need not fear about preferring one Doctor over David Tennant - he isn't the Doctor Who God
![]() 9 and 10 were fantastic, but looking back over the show as a whole, maybe too modernised. I think they have made a superb choice with the casting and writing of the Eleventh Doctor and as of Flesh and Stone - he's my preference over the three ![]() And yes, David Tenannt did get the show's popularity through the roof, but now, as someone above said, we can enjoy it without needing an epic disaster every week. |

I think they're both brilliant.
Matt is a revelation when he's being his Doctor. However at times there seems to be this shift in writing to try and give him Tennant-isms almost as if the writers don't entirely trust us not to accept a Doctor that is different from Davids. Ironically those are the moments when Matts Doctor does kinda fall flat slightly. |
